- The Last of UsFebruary 9, 2023 at 11:28 am #1205298364Oh, this is beyond painful to look at. And it’s like that in every decade since the beggining of the institution.
And yes, basically every wrong decision an Oscar win can have, happens in this category: bad picks over very deserving ones, unawarded iconic roles, atrocious snubs, uneven set of nominees, performances coming only coming from drama to “mid”/dark comedies, recognition of overdueness at the worst time, excess of nominations for some performers, lack of diversity… even some of these items are consequences of some others and keep themselves in this retroactive vicious circle that makes me believe things will never change for the better.
Eh but does this really happen more in Best Actress than any other category or do we just care a lot more about Best Actress? lol
February 9, 2023 at 11:35 am #1205298377Interesting Fact – If Everything Everywhere as originally planned, was made with Jackie Chan as a lead, then Yeoh would have played the role of her wife. She would have been the Waymond of the story. But instead of Waymond, her name would have been Winona.

The irony is that Ke Huy Quan seems safer than Yeoh for a win, so it stands to reason to assume that she would be winning for the role of Winona. That said, who knows would EEAAO be what it is now, if Jackie Chan was the lead. Lion’s share of EEAAO success is Michelle.
Spreading the Love: Oscars 2023
Best Picture: Everything Everywhere All At Once
Best Director: The Daniels
Best Actor: Colin Farrell
Best Actress: Cate Blanchett
Best Supporting Actor: Ke Huy Quan
Best Supporting Actress: Angela BassettFebruary 9, 2023 at 11:54 am #1205298406Yea it’s fascinating to think about how that would’ve played out. I think so much of Yeoh/Quan’s buzz is the fact that for her it’s first time on the top of the call sheet and for him it’s one of the greatest comeback stories Hollywood’s ever had. IN THEORY, Yeoh would’ve been a contender in supporting actress, but Yeoh being great in a supporting role would not have nearly the same element of surprise, she’s been great in supporting roles for years. And Jackie Chan, while maybe rarely getting to show this much range, has been leading movies for years and already has an honorary oscar.
I think so much about the reception of that movie would’ve been completely different if it had been Chan and Yeoh instead of Yeoh and Quan (and I’d wager to guess it wouldn’t have been as big of a success).
February 9, 2023 at 12:28 pm #1205298453My biggest objection to a third Blanchett win is that it will tie her with Meryl, and I just don’t think she’s reached that level yet. I don’t even believe Frances McDormand was deserving.

All three are accomplished actors and there’s no need for these comparisons. McDormand wasn’t my favorite either but I respect her win and I find immense beauty in her subtle performance. That being said, I do hope Viola and Regina win in lead soon.
February 9, 2023 at 3:06 pm #1205298623My dilemma with this race is that Cate gives a master class performance, but I’m rooting for someone else. It isn’t that I want Cate to lose, but for Michelle to win.
Problem solved if Riseborough takes it.The Sunne in Splendour.
I prefer my roses whiteFebruary 9, 2023 at 3:07 pm #1205298625I know people shit on Chastain but I was thrilled by her win! She was overdue and in a mid-field, her win isn’t something I was against. I was indeed supporting it (Cruz was clearly the best but considering she was a past winner, it didn’t upset me)
This. The drama when people go after Chastain for a good performance. The movie was basic, but she elevated that biopic many times. It was a good lineup. It could have been so much worse gaaawwddd

I prefer my roses whiteFebruary 9, 2023 at 4:27 pm #1205298728Yes, that’s why Michelle Yeoh should win!
Jan, she should. But if a voter honestly thinks anyone else has a much better performance than hers, he shouldn’t vote for her just because her movie is stronger.
February 9, 2023 at 4:44 pm #1205298753Darling, Chastain’s Cheeks is fourth at best in that lineup. While it wasn’t as bad as Worst Best Actress Winner from Silver Linings Playbook, it’s still an underwhelming victory over a much stronger performances (Cruz, Stewart).
I didn’t watch Parallel Mothers yet. But in no way I thought Stewart was better than Chastain, her movie was.
