This post from her felt… weird, but I do understand having passion for something you enjoyed. I remember a few years back when Reese Witherspoon said that her friend Naomi Watts (The Impossible) had given the best performance since Meryl Streep in Sophie’s Choice. It did not come off as genuine at all. Her performance was good but… hell no!

Reese knew Naomi deserved the nod, but the comparison is insane indeed.

Darling, what is this Clayton Davis person is up to? Seems like he post the same thing every hour on twitter lol…

Variety is like: “That campaign didn’t give us any money, let’s just post and regurgitate nonsense”

A statement I’ve been hearing a lot lately is “Blanchett is winning but I want Yeoh to win.” Granted, it’s still early but if Blanchett continues to steamroll (BAFTA win) then I could see this narrative building up even more for Yeoh. Voters would actually have to vote for her though so she needs SAG. BAFTA usually calls the winner in tight races like these but since SAG is last, Yeoh winning could push her over the finish line.

I think that the fact that Yeoh is playing a much more likeable character than Blanchett will help her: when was the last time that the best actress winner won for playing someone as dark as Lydia Tár?

Everyone is now watching the movie due to its controversy. It reminds of the win pulled by Marcia Gay Harden. Small movie no one saw. Grassroots campaign that when everyone saw the performance it was hard not to give it to her. Andrea is the performance that makes you feel the most of this lineup.

Marcia Gay Harden was in a heavily divided race, where every nominated act won a precursor. Andrea is getting bad press for her nomination. She ain’t winning.

That’s what I was saying as well. If these white celebs (some were British like Frances Fisher, some were American like Sarah Paulson, some were Australian like Cate Blanchett) had pushed hard for Tang Wei or Park Hae-il to get a nom, then their film could have had that solo nom like Aftersun or To Leslie did. However, they won’t push for anyone who’s not white or who’s in a genre film.

Blanchett did give a shout to Tang Wei, you know

I feel for the other nominees in her category. All this focus on a competitor overshadowing their great work.

Theron played a serial killer, Winslet played a Nazi criminal and Kathy Bates played a psycho. So there is precedence and Lydia Tár isn’t exactly an inaccessible or too cold as people say. You do come out of the film with mixed feelings about her.

Also note that both Yeoh and Blanchett are in top tier contenders.

Let’s also not forget that this season, Blanchett did “Actors on Actors” with Yeoh, giving us such fresh and beautiful perspective on her work, she presented Viola with her award at Palm Springs, giving an epic speech about Viola’s work and “The Woman King” and was the only one this season mentioning Tang Wei. So, people need to think twice before they throw her with the likes of Frances Fisher.

Theron was undeniable in terms of her reviews, had the physical transformation aspect (easily quantifiable acting) and no Yeoh equivalent in the race to emerge as a serious competitor. Winslet had a massive overdue narrative (and the character is more in line with Arendt’s conception of banal evil rather than the typical malice of a villain).

Also your three examples were villains but not cold characters necessarily. Tár as a character is quite cold.

also as someone who’s competing this year I hardy think she was going to be part of a campaign to get another woman a leading actress nomination.

I also agree with Lydia Tar being too cold and that might help Michelle Yeoh. I really walked out of that theater feeling so cold about her and that film that it tainted the acting she did.

    Theron played a serial killer,
However she had big emotional scenes of empathy. It wasn’t a “cold”character per se. It felt more human than Lydia Tar.
