Cotillard yet havent convincingly played someone with different precise accent, nationally, physicality of someone thats different from her own country.

Please, the majority of Hollywood actresses can barely speak English

are they though? it’s not like it’s the slap, or even the wrong winner being announced. i haven’t seen chatter outside of the awards obsessed.

This lol. I love Andrea and think she gives the best performance in this lineup but even over here (where whilst not a household name she is much more known than in the US) hardly anyone is talking about this whole story and usually the trades go over the top when there’s a homegrown Oscar nominee and no one outside of those who are already following this story are aware of her nomination or the controversy around it. Although I guess to be fair I doubt most people would even be aware of who is in the Best Actress race this year if they weren’t following it closely outside of Yeoh (because the film was a big hit) and Blanchett (because she’s Blanchett) and even then I doubt most people could even tell you what the latter’s film is called.

It’s very much something that only the industry and the prognosticators, pundits and journalists who follow these awards are talking about. Although then again of course they are the only ones who probably matter when it comes to the final round of voting.

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

Oh, come on! You’re asking an English accent from a woman whose mother tongue is French, so the fair thing to ask would be for her to do a French dialect, which she has done in some of her films. Plus, she speaks English in many of her roles and it’s not like she’s doing something stupid like Winslet speaking in a German accent while The Reader is set in Germany, or the countless US/UK/Australian actors doing the same cringey thing. Ugh, on top of racism, xenophobia, imperialism, Eurocentrism and countless other forms of oppresion, white people never seem to get enough and now we’re adding the entitlement of asking for foreign actors to speak perfect English (while most white people from the US only speak one language). Exhausting! IF for some reason Blanchett is stopped by Yeoh at the BAFTAs or if they don’t feeling like giving her a third Oscar, I can see Riseborough winning this. I mean, the amount of gymnastics the industry has to pull off in order to deny a woman of color the Best Actress statue is insane. Double exhausting!

Brando played Italian in godfather, he did the accent. Imagine it without the the accent. Now that would look real stupid .

48 hours ago I would’ve agreed, but establishment media (Guardian, Daily Mail – not linking to that trash pile, BBC to name three) have now published multiple articles surrounding the investigation. I think they were just slow to pick it up. Robbie Collin (for non-UK users, he’s arguably one of the most prominent film critics in the UK) makes anecdotal reference to the situation ‘going mainstream’ now. I honestly hope they don’t amplify the situation more than necessary. It comes off as trivial to the average reader.

The trades are picking it up for sure (I’d even argue some of them were talking about the fairness and lack thereof of the campaign even from when the nomination happened) and I’ll clarify I wasn’t trying to suggest there wasn’t any attention being given towards it. What I meant more was that the chatter around this whole situation feels very muted when you go outside of the industry and critical bubble. This isn’t like the slap or the La La Land debacle or even the numerous instances when we’ve had a shut out of female directors and poc acting and creative talent in nominations where it has become a major conversational talking point.

Although then again as I did say in my post I don’t think the other nominees in this category are receiving much attention this year either so it’s probably more of a testament to how more and more irrelevant the Oscars have become as a talking point amongst the gp than anything else.

Where was this energy for Toni Collette and her unforgetable performance in Hereditaty 😪

Almost 5 years later and we are still on that same BS.

Collette hasn’t been ‘unforgettable’ since Muriel’s Wedding. She didn’t do anything that no one else has done in a run-of-the-mill horror movie before her.

Uk critics might not care, but the uk,eu bloc voters that actually work in films might. Its just one month anyway, we will see who actually pull the win.it will be very interesting.

Honestly, I don’t see UK/EU bloc voters doing something big for Andrea. As was said, she was not shortlisted for BAFTA, LOndon critics group, as well as Irish group, ignored her. So, all in all, she may have some support among her colleagues, but I doubt it will be a big factor.

On the other hand, TAR is doing (relatively) good with European audience. It has earned $3,5M on international box office ($1,8M in UK since January, 13th). Even in USA, Banshees, EEAAO, TAR are all getting rerelease/wider release. “To Leslie” is being released but to no avail.

Off topic: When people mention “All-Time” perfornances, Angela Bassett’s performance in What Love Got To Do With It deserves a mention.

Yet again someone claiming that acting is being good at imitating accents. 😉

And I am sure that they are experts in this field  saying that Polish accent is easy for a French speaker to pull off…Hahaha

Exactly. Great acting is not about imitating a living famous person’s accent. Then what is the difference between Great actors and snl actors? Its about creating a character that is influenced by the specific times and places they live in with that affects their accent, physicality, movement, voice.this one line is not too hard to understand.

the irony is that Marion cotillard did all of the things you mention in la vie en rose, lol.
