Crazy how McDonagh might end up directing 7 nominated performances in two movies and still not making director.
FYC:
The HBO darlings everywhere (The Last of Us, Succession, The White Lotus, Perry Mason, Somebody Somewhere, White House Plumbers, Love & Death);
The Apple gang (Bad Sisters, Slow Horses, Shrinking, Ted Lasso, Black Bird);
Poker Face, The Great, The Bear, Evil (especially Katja Herbers) and The Good Fight.Please! These gays, they're trying to murder me!
January 19, 2023 at 6:08 am #1205252971I think Park Chan Wook can still nab this.

He’s a much better writer than director tbh.
January 19, 2023 at 6:09 am #1205252977Ah damned where’s that Unpopular Opinions thread….

I like his direction, it’s firm and solid, it’s for sure in my top 5 this year.
I do agree he does write best tho.FYC:

Especially since he is a master of subtle visual storytelling and doesn’t waste a single frame. He should be locked in.
For Your Consideration:
The Banshees of Inisherin in ALL categories, including:
- Best Picture
- Best Director
- Best Actor (Colin Farrell)
- Best Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson)
- Best Supporting Actor (Barry Keoghan)
- Best Supporting Actress (Kerry Condon)
- Best Supporting Actress (Sheila Flitton)
- Best Original ScreenplayLetterboxd: Ray_In_Bruges
January 19, 2023 at 6:19 am #1205253002I feel content predicting The Daniels, Spielberg, Field and Berger but that last spot in director is wrangling my brain a bit? Is it really just going to be McDonagh? There’s something about it that just feels too easy to be true.
The same. I thought McDonagh was a lock but AQOTWF and DTL are giving me Roma and Cold War vibes (both foreign movies getting the nomination).
January 19, 2023 at 6:21 am #1205253008At BAFTAs,
Overperform: All Quiet, Elvis, TAR and The Batman
Underperform: Aftersun, Women Talking, The Fabelmans
I don’t know about Women Talking, but it’s pretty clear Aftersun is not happening for BP now. I do think it’s been massively over-praised lately.

Agreed, but I have absolutely no idea what to replace them with! If not for the mandatory 10 Best Picture nominees, this would’ve been a 7 – 8 year at best…

January 19, 2023 at 6:29 am #1205253043Top Gun bombed at the BAFTAS as expected, but we’ll see a very different scenario at the Oscars. It’ll get all nominations it can get, except for best actor.
January 19, 2023 at 6:30 am #1205253045All Quiet on the Western Front, The Whale and Triangle of Sadness are taking the last 3 spots.

Is All Quiet even at the bottom though? At this point it’s probably a mid tier already.

January 19, 2023 at 6:37 am #1205253062I don’t buy Triangle of Sadness in BP. AQOTWF is obviously a lock at this point. It’s probably ahead of some movies we think are locked.
