The way The Fablemans missed ACE in favor of The Woman King, and Babylon missed in favor of The Menu.

if this is supposed to change the best editing race…none of these movies were nominated in that category.

    - everything everywhere all at once (best picture)
    - daniel scheinert, daniel kwan (best director)

OK, I need to ask this… Do we really expect EEAAO to go full sweep with its three main contenders go empty-handed in all above-the-line categories?

Realistically, I can see EEAAO winning Picture, Director, Screenplay. But then add Actress, Supporting Actor and Editing and the fact The Fabelmans, Banshees and TAR would have to go empty-handed in above-the-line categories (Basset for Best Supporting Actress seems locked, plus Farrell may not win Actor) I can’t remember when it happened the last time?

Perhaps King’s speech, but Portman won Actress, Bale and Leo won Supporting roles for “The Fighter”, Social Network won Adapted Screenplay. So, even that is not comparable to what we would have here.

    Spreading the Love: Oscars 2023
Best Picture: Everything Everywhere All At Once
    Best Director: The Daniels
    Best Actor: Colin Farrell
    Best Actress: Cate Blanchett
Best Supporting Actor: Ke Huy Quan
    Best Supporting Actress: Angela Bassett

Some of us are hoping this year is a series of “firsts”.
How refreshing. How daunting for prognosticators.

gone with the wind, from here to eternity, on the waterfront, it happened one night, one flew over the cuckoos nest, the silence of the lambs, mrs miniver all won picture, director, 2 acting plus screenplay
not impossible for eeao to do the same but usually movies that sweep lose director or screenplay and that is what eeao will do
maybe spielberg wins director or the banshees wins screenplay

Thanks. I remembered “The Silence of the Lambs” which may be the most comparable here. I tend to agree that it is not impossible, but it is not just about winning. It is also about leaving your competition without anything which in the era of expanded lineup is not easy. And I am not sure that 1930s to 1950s when most of those happened are comparable to the situation we have now.

Yeah, at the end, any of those can chip from EEAAO sweep – Banshees with Screenplay (plus it can get an Actor), Fabelmans with Director, TAR with Actress. Not all of them simultaneously, but I can see one or two of these happening.

Not so sure but I have a feeling either Todd or Tar might quietly hit the homerun.

If TÁR won Best Picture, I’d regain so much respect for The Academy.

They should unapologetically lean into that kind of elitism more often.

We need less “universal” winners like CODA and Green Book and more “high-brow” winners like Nomadland and No Country for Old Men.

Eh that’s never really what the oscars were supposed to be though. They were founded by producers as a way to celebrate and honor, yes, but also market the film industry. That was part of the intention with the awards creation. There’s a reason the oscar’s didn’t start rewarding indie films in any big way until the 90’s (60+ years into their existence), it’s because that’s when the market for them started to blow up. That market is dwindling now, but there’s hope it will come back, and the oscars can help with that.

The oscars are a valuable marketing resource for those very highbrow movies that don’t naturally make as much money, so I don’t think the institution continuing to lose cultural relevance with broader audiences will turn out well for anyone.

Hey. I enjoyed Coda AND Greenbook. I also liked No Country and with a little effort, Nomadland. I don’t apologize for that.

Give me Star Wars and My Own Private Idaho.

Does anybody thlnk Babylon is a lock for original score? I have it at first but I think EEAO can be a dark horse. Both are the most bombastic scores of the year, along with maybe All Quiet. The academy loves awarding the most “music” score just like when La La land and Black Panther won for their years. I think the only disadvantage that Babylon has is it may be a bit too similar to LLL when it comes to it’s quieter and more subtle tracks. While EEAO is a best pic nominee– arguably in the top 3 as well. Both scores we nominated for bafta and the academy as well.

I think Todd Field could upset in Best Director after those nominations for Tár in Editing and Cinematography but he needs to win something like BAFTA or DGA to be a real threat.

I just saw TAR for the first time. I honestly did not like it that much. Kate’s performance was top notch, and the film was well written and directed, but I just do not see it as something exceptional.

I found the film to be too cold for me. And I found the lead character unlikable.

This is how I rank the 10 Best Picture Nominees:

    1. All Quiet on the Western Front – 8.5/10
    2. The Banshees of Inisherin – 8.5/10
    3. Elvis – 7.5/10
    4. Women Talking – 7.5/10
    5. The Fabelmans – 7.5/10
    6. Everything Everywhere All at Once – 7/10
    7. Top Gun Maverick – 7/10
    8. Tar – 7/10
    9. Avatar The Way of Water – 7/10
    10. Triangle of Sadness – did not see it yet.

I’m predicting AQOTWF. Of the nominated movies it’s the score that calls the most attention to itself. I’m the type of person that rarely notices scores on the first watch and I NOTICED the All Quiet score when I watched it. I’m guessing a lot of of the general membership of the academy might have the same experience.
