Why are people not predicting S.S. Rajamouli as the foreign director pick and RRR for the 9th or 10th spots in Best Feature Film? Is it because he’s an unknown filmmaker?
It’s a multitude of reasons why RRR isn’t being considered a threat for a nomination:
(1) the elephant in the room being India did not submit the film as their pick (which is typical Indian behaviour considering the films they’ve not submitted in the past).
(2) the film is a massive international success and the second highest grossing film in India period with large footfalls in the Middle East, China etc. The film had no festival run and had never been marketed for awards until recently, which does hurt it’s prestige quite a lot.
(3) the film deals with British colonialism and while I think this might be a controversial take, but I do think it’s not going to get the support from the British bloc which might hurt it since Brits are one of the largest consumers of Indian films outside Asia. Expect it to miss the nomination at BAFTA.
Now when it comes to S.S. Rajamouli, the notion that he is unknown is downright laughable since he’s literally one of the most well known Asian filmmakers with a string of masterpieces under his belt. I highly doubt prominent directors in the Academy don’t know him or are unfamiliar with his previous work. RRR is nowhere close to his best work (especially when you consider the monster of a duology that was Bahubali or Eega or Magadheera). There has always been a kind of cultural divide between films from China, South East and India and between the Academy which is quite evident by the way large scale Asian successes like The Mermaid or Devdas miss nominations, let alone wins which is totally fine since the Academy is nowhere close to being an international body. That’s why a nomination like Lunana was a major shock. Expect the film to have a better chance at something like the Golden Globes. The film does have undeniable techs (like most Indian period films and like Rajamouli’s previous work) and has the typical lavish Indian dance sequences that can get the film a nomination or two in those departments but I really don’t expect the actors etc to go for this kind of film.
Also, it’s really funny to me that some particular critics have chosen this film to push with all the might they can considering that it’s far from Rajamouli’s best work, it isn’t even one of the top 10 best Indian films of the year and because it’s futile to do so at this point after it having been snubbed by the Academy of its home country.
Apologies for the long message. I do think films that premiere in festivals and have less of a blockbustery feel to them have much better chances at nominations if they’re submitted by their countries. Especially for films from a totally different culture, there exists enough of a gap for any roadblocks to stall the momentum of a film. That’s the reason why non Japanese, non Farhadi Eastern films have a nil record at the Academy. Parasite opened the door for Korean films at the Oscars, let’s hope there come times ahead when films from other African or Asian countries open American audiences to a whole new world of filmmaking.

Netflix to Bardo and White Noise
I think the deciding factor for RRR is going to be how much Netflix decides to campaign for it. If they decide the reception for White Noise is too mixed and White Onion is too lowbrow, then RRR might be their only real BP shot. If they put their full campaigning weight behind it, with how well liked it was I think it’s getting 5+ nominations easy (BP, BD, etc), but if they ignore it I think it’ll be lucky to crack 1. They’ve already launched a full campaign page for it, which leads me to think they’re taking it seriousply.
And not getting selected by India doesn’t HAVE to be a drawback, if anything sometimes it leads a movie to overperform almost out of protest. Happened many times to Almodovar movies (including just last year)

You can’t compare a European film to an Eastern film since the Academy’s membership is overwhelmingly West leaning, which makes it much easier for talked about European contenders to get nominations without being submitted. For films from the other side of the globe, the Academy has a near nil record. Not being submitted by your own country is almost a death blow when you’re film is not a European one and the last time a film from the country was nominated was way back in 2001 when it lost even after coming off an unprecedented sweep of the Asian awards.
