I’m sure others were asked but they refused. Many people don’t want anything to do with it so Kimmel should do. Just spare us the stupid jokes and shine a light on the movies. That’s why we’re watching.

Bit of a boring choice, but after the last few years it’s clear that a solid, experienced hand like his is needed I’d say – let’s just hope is monologue avoids the inevitable jokes at the expenses of films like Women Talking or Tár.

Kimmel is a bit of an uninspired choice, but better than last year’s chaotic menagerie. I still hope one day we can have a true film star host the Oscars again, instead of a TV personality; for example, George Clooney & Julia Roberts would’ve made a wonderful duo. Timely, charming, marvelous chemistry, and very entertaining…

I bet they begged Chris Rock to host, he rightfully declined, and here’s what we’re left with instead. Meh.

I’m fine with Kimmel. He was competent the other times he hosted, which is really all you can ask. And I’m glad they went back to not only having a host, but one host. Them announcing it this early at least shows they have an eye out for what they want the show to be, especially since some higher-ups apparently want to return to all categories being announced and aired on the main show. All I’m looking for is the lowest amount of skits, unfunny jokes, and anti-cinema humor as they can possibly provide and for winners not to be played off during their speeches.

From quotes the new president has given, it sounds like they’re going to try going back to the more old school, unashamedly sincere vibe the oscars used to have, so I have high hopes.

What happened to new people? Someone who hasn’t done it before. Who would seem FRESH.

Stephen Colbert. Hasan Minhaj. Ali Wong.  Jaboukie Young-White.

The ceremony is being broadcast by ABC. If they were going to select a late night talk show host, it was going to be Kimmel; they’d never have picked Colbert, whose show is on CBS.

    😩

I thought Letterman hosted when he was on CBS but maybe it was when he was on his first show before that.

Letterman hosted the 1995 Oscars, which were shown on ABC but in 1995, ABC didn’t broadcast a late night talk show; between 1980 and 2005, at 11:30 p.m., ABC broadcast Nightline, a late night television news program hosted by Ted Koppel.

Hopefully, they announce the nominees like they used to, in front of the press.

The trailer for The Whale markets it as a Hallmark film which is funny since it’s from the same mind that brought you Black Swan and Mother!. A24 marketing is something.
