the critics loved TG. GP adored Maverick. Industry continues to rave about the movie being one of the best in recent years. whats not to get? its one of the rare sequels done right that was originally never even meant to be played as an serious Oscar contender until the phenomenon it became. its the definition of your classic old school Hollywood blockbuster the Academy favors

Yeah but sell me a path to BP. Besides PGA what else do you see TG winning?

Idk about winning but I see TG as a very probably BP contender at the Globes and Critics Choice, plus most likely SAG stunt ensemble. If it goes into the race with a Best Picture nomination for GG Drama, CC for BP, and PGA that’s a pretty decent haul.
Plus I think the academy knows they kind of HAVE to nominate at least 1-2 bonafide box office hits this year, and TG has better reviews than Black Panther, a higher prestige factor, and more divers fans in terms of age. I think that’s why it’s in, unless Avatar completely blows it out of the water, which i suppose is possible.

I have no doubt it’s getting nominated for BP but I don’t know about winning. What other movies won with just PGA?
November 28, 2022 at 8:40 am #1205169023Does anyone know why The Fabelmans isn’t playing at any Cinemark theater near me, even though I’m in a major U.S. city? Some other cinemas are screening it, though the showtimes are limited…

November 28, 2022 at 8:43 am #1205169028I didn’t like Top Gun: Maverick. When was the last time a Pure Commercial Movie won? GLADIATOR(2000)? Return of the King? But Return of the King was Lord of the Rings 3 so I suppose GLADIATOR. IF Avatar 2 is a Huge Success Worldwide including China, I suppose Avatar 2 could be winning Best Picture Oscar. Best Director Oscar? Cameron? Kosinski?

Gladiator won by PGA alone I think

Nein, it also won the Globe and BAFTA.

ooooooh yea I’m with you I’d be shocked if TG wins BP. Yea I won’t believe it unless it also wins something like the Globe (probably it’s best bet after PGA) and Kosinski starts racking up director noms (although I don’t think an oscar nom for him would be a necessity)
November 28, 2022 at 9:24 am #1205169076Matilda the Musical will be this year’s Tick Tick Boom, unless it will be Netflix’s biggest hit.
November 28, 2022 at 9:26 am #1205169081Spielberg will probably win an Oscar because the Academy didn’t give him any for WSS hehehe.

The Audience, The Critics, The Cinema Score, The Performances, and The Box Office.
All of the things
Yet if you look at the most recent winners they didn’t have all of the “things” – what they had was late surging industry support, esp. from SAG.

I still think Spielberg is winning best director but I feel like the chatter around the film as a whole has been muted since its release.
I feel like something like Women Talking (which will have just started its theatrical release when voting begins) is going to upset in drama at the Globes and then Best Picture will be between it and whichever of Everything Everywhere All at Once and Banshees wins on the comedy side.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
