Once again, somber adult dramas like She Said don’t need to be box office hits to be in the awards race. Box office can help a film’s chances but nobody was expecting She Said to do Top Gun or even Elvis numbers. (Although how the #@$^ did She Said get a $30 million budget?! What did they spend it on?!) We’ll all do the same song and dance this time next week when The Fabelmans mega-flops.

She Said can still get nominated in the Top 10. I agree that box office doesn’t matter for that movie.

That was 7 years ago. There was a time when Spotlight could make $100 million but that’s not how the box office works anymore. Compare the grosses of Chicago & West Side Story or The Blind Side & King Richard.

Times and viewing habits have changed post-pandemic. Spotlight would never do $100 today; many of its viewers would have waited to stream it at home.

She Said had a budget of 30 million!? Wow. I assumed it was a smaller film.

    It’s giving… money laundering scheme.

well the reviews and audience reception is also just decent, and maria schrader isn’t a big name.

Currently wondering if I’m maybe underestimating Elvis when it comes to a potential BP nomination. I currently have it in Actor, Production Design, Costumes, Make-Up and Sound, and it probably isn’t far off in Editing as well. That package plus the great box office and the audience love probably don’t put it further than top 15.

Might not be a bad call.

It wouldn’t be that surprising to see Tar get Director and Screenplay nominations but miss Picture.
