What are Park Chan-wook’s chances to get into Best Director for Decision to Leave? He is highly overdue for The Handmaiden and Oldboy so i want him to at least get a nom. PLEASE ACADEMY MAKE IT HAPPEN.

feinberg put park today 6th in his  best director prediction (and the movie first in international film). But at the same time he says the movie doesn’t have chance to be nominated in best picture

    Who cares about Feinberg?

Michelle (Yeoh, Williams) Oscar campaign manager.

feinberg usually is right in his predictions about foreign directors nominated in best director ( unless cases of big bias of a movie that he loves a lot like the a hero case). So i think is a good answer to his specific question about that foreign director chances in best director

I do wonder where [RRR] can get in at the Oscars if the passion persists even at the Academy.

    On a good day?

    Picture
    Director – S. S. Rajamouli
    Editing
    Score
    Song – “Naatu Naatu”
    Vfx

Maybe Production Design and Original Screenplay too

I love RRR and I’ve thought about this a lot, lol

It needs to get a win at the remaining two Trifecta for serious consideration

But the passion Drive My Car and Parasite had from critics group, I see that this year for RRR

RRR is really the dark horse here and is gaining momentum. They are putting up a massive campaign for it, and it’s also getting a critics push that I was not anticipating. Rajamouli also makes so much sense as the international pick by the Director’s Branch.

Being Indian, I can vouch for the fact that the Oscar Submission Committee here is an absolute joke. We’ve screwed this up too many times. They tend to choose these really random films at times that would never get nominated because they cater to largely Indian sensibilities. RRR does so too, but its story (and execution) is more universal. Ironically, the film they chose this year instead of RRR is actually great, but RRR was a singularly unique experience at the movies and they should have realised that.

Just posting this because I happened to be looking it up and thought it was interesting; all the top oscar contenders to reach the top 30 highest grossers of the year, in order:

    #1 Top Gun: Maverick
    #3 Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
    #11 Elvis
#26 Everything Everywhere All At Once
    #27 The Woman King

Avatar will surely join that list somewhere. That fact that all five of those (plus Avatar) are major contenders is pretty cool. If all 5-6 get nominated for BP I think it could only look good for the academy, and it’s cool that basically all of those have stuff going for them other than just their box office

but that is an answer for a best picture nom, not for a best director nom. Another round didn’t win in the trifecta but was nominated to best director in the oscars

also the academy could nominated two foreign lenguage movies to best director if they like both. They already did it in 2018

I think 2018 was a bit of an exception though. Yes, Roma is a foreign language film but it wasn’t really TALKED about as a foreign language film the same with something like Decision to Leave or Cold War or RRR or Another Round are. Cuaron was already an oscar winning director with many english language hits under his belt, Roma had pre-release buzz. It was almost an oscar movie, before it was a foreign language movie (although it was ofc both). It’s very hard for more than one foreign language director to build enough buzz virtually from scratch when they don’t have a previous oscar history.

i think could happend if one of the foreign lenguage movies is nominated in critics choice and/or PGA for best film ( at this point i think we can’t take that from a posibility)  and the other is in a situation similar than cold war and another round

Yep !!! Too many good actors out there for Cruise to get nominated and, btw, he’s not that popular with those in the Academy, just sayin’
