My issue putting Avatar 2 on director is what happened to Dune last year. Wondering if the Academy will snub another sci-fi big budget film. Of course they love Cameron. I’ll wait until I see Avatar 2 to decide if he’s getting in.

But i think it will go for EEAAO, which would also be a great winner, or, don’t at me please I’m just predicting, Maverick. Please! These gays, they're trying to murder me!

Until I see Avatar 2, I can honestly say its between these two – not Fablemans.

As long as banshees wins actor or supporting actress I would be happy I just hope it doesn’t go home empty handed
December 7, 2022 at 2:25 pm #1205182163Darlings, I took DTL and Park out of my predictions as well. The critics are very mixed and muted on it, unfortunately. Even Chang from LAT, who championed Drive My Car like his life and existence depended on it, only gave it 3 stars at Cannes, and some French critics at Cannes hated it. One even wonders if the voters will act like there’s only one slot for an “Asian” or “Asian American” film (EEAAO is an Asian American film and pretty much a lock for Best Picture), because they often vote that way.
The critics seem to be championing India’s RRR, but they are severely hampered by the fact that it’s not India’s official submission so it can only get nominations like Picture, Director, or Screenplay, which it’s unlikely to win, unlike Drive My Car from last year.
They really need to change the Oscar rules so the International Feature goes to the director/producers instead of the country and the voters can choose which films to nominate instead of the country. Happening which won at Gotham cannot be submitted this year for the Oscars as it was snubbed last year by the French committee in favor of Titane. The reception for All Quiet on the Western Front is muted. This really could be another year that no non-English film or director gets in.

I don’t think you can compare Dune to Avatar 2. Cameron was already nominated for the first film.

Everything Everywhere All At Once in every eligible category
Hold My Hand - Lady Gaga for Best Original Song
December 8, 2022 at 1:34 am #1205182734Interesting that despite nominating Margot Robbie, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Score, Cinematography, Sound, Visual Effects, Production Design and Costume Design, the Satellite Awards did not nominate Babylon for Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, nor Damien Chazelle for Best Director.

Not comparing him to Denis, just saying if Avatar 2 is a BP strong contender and it doesn’t get nominated this year it might tell me the directors branch is becoming more stringent with nominated those type of flicks. Denis should have gotten nominated, so when I see Avatar 2 if it’s really that good and it doesn’t happen could be telling of how I’ll predict future BD nominees.

December 8, 2022 at 9:16 am #1205183102I like that Taylor is campaigning but I wouldn’t bet on her being nominated, the Oscars usually nominate shorts with social messages something ATW lacks.
December 8, 2022 at 9:22 am #1205183122All this and she won’t even make the shortlist I’m afraid. I’ll still watch the conversation, though!
