My opinion is merely based on what I witnessed watching the film. What I witnessed was Samantha Morton in a 5-10 minute role and Ashley Judd playing herself in a 3 minute role, were entirely more impactful and more powerful performances than its own 2 leads. I think we have far too many showier ACTUAL supporting performances than Carey Mulligan. Just take a look at the odds, it never hurts to peep the odds and then the expert predictions. She Said is almost nill, Carey Mulligan is almost nill. As I said, Adapted or Bust at least for me
Seems like you’re new to this website. Take a look at the “expert” predictions from mostly any year and they’re dead wrong a lot of the times.
I’m trying not to read too deep into the NBR results, especially since the season’s just getting started but I do have some thoughts. Top Gun Maverick has officially taken off. NBR is where Mad Max Fury Road established itself as not just a populist pipe dream like No Way Home and became an actual contender. It’s also looking like a lock in cinematography. RRR is building momentum. What if its Selma? Gets nominated for just picture and song? Could Rajamouli be this year’s international director too? Good for Till, Aftersun & The Woman King. Bad for She Said, Elvis (NBR typically nominates something from WB) and The Whale. I’ll wait for a major precursor or at least AFI before making further conclusions. I think that anyone still predicting Pinocchio in BP should abandon ship ASAP. It’s not even sweeping the animated feature awards. NBR is an animation-friendly group so Pinocchio had a real chance here. Netflix is going to make Glass Onion their main priority and we’ll see how that goes. I think Glass Onion’s release strategy has been very strategic in terms of reminding voters/critics that it exists at the exact right moments.
I agree with you. TBH, after watching Pinocchio it was great but not BP nominee great considering the competition. And now way the Academy was going to pick it. Never had in my top 10.

I am going to make the case for Maria Shrader. I know she is at 100-1 odds but her direction is flawless and superb. Each scene is brilliantly crafted and is teeming with life as it is actually lived. An interesting comparison can be made with frontrunner Steven Spielberg’s mixed results direction of The Fabelmans – yes, there are brilliant stretches of direction in his film but there are also scenes that absolutely do not work and have poor directorial choices. Shrader deserves a nomination; she is unlikely to get one but that’s not the point. Consensus is weird: why do certain films and filmmakers get momentum when other much greater achievements get – as Julie Andrews would say: “egregiously overlooked”??? (; She Said is an amazing movie, one of the very best of 2022 and a large part of its achievement is Maria Shrader’s thrilling stunning direction!

Between AFI and NBR, most of the realistic contenders for the BP lineup are represented.
Feels like the top half of the lineup has to be: Fablemans, EEAAO, Banshees, Top Gun Maverick, and one of Avatar/Women Talking/TAR. Even though TAR didn’t make NBR, I’m not willing to take it out of this group when it’s doing so well with critics and Avatar and Women Talking haven’t shown their strength yet.
I think Babylon might be over before it’s even had a chance to start.

Women TalkingHistorically, AFI’s picks tend to line up with the nominees for Best Picture with 6-8 films overlapping (88/116 over the last 13 years resulting in a 75% average).
Glass Onion getting snubbed here is weird, since it’s up there with their tastes and the first movie got in.
Babylon (I still think it will get in) instead of Nope and that’s probably the Best Picture 10, with She Said/Woman King with possibility of being snubbed for Glass Onion or a foreign pick.
Paramount is definitely gonna prioritize TG after Babylon’s continuous lack of support
