They probably have mistaken it for West Side Story, which I think was more deserving to win (especially for Director and Cinematography) than The Fabelmans.
West Side Story is Spielberg’s best movie ever, his best direction, and for me it deserved all the Oscars it could get last year. But they went with drivel instead, ho hum. I saw West Side Story in a movie theater 7 times!
I came on here though to talk about Empire of Light and why I love that movie: it has a group of working class people actually doing their work! The movie theater they work at is an important character in the movie. They are ordinary working class people, not considered important, and we get to know them and they are interesting. I think the movie has been maligned precisely because of a misunderstanding about what the film is – it’s not just a story about a middle-aged woman who gets involved with a much younger man of a different race, it is also about working class lives and the work involved that we actually get to see in great detail. This is unusual! The movie is so much better than it is being given credit for and is really quite remarkable!
December 17, 2022 at 10:13 pm #1205199476It’s amazing how many Oscars films managed to get higher than 7.7 on IMDb this year. This is even more impressive than pre-Covid years.
[For 7.7 or higher]
2021: only 4
1. 8.3/Spider Man
2. 8.0/Dune
3. 8.0/CODA
4. 7.8/Worst Person in the World2022 so far: 11!
1. 8.4/ TGM
2. 8.1/ Banshees
3. 8.1/ EEAAO
4. 8.1/ Avatar 2
5. 7.9/ The Fabelmans
6. 7.9/ RRR
7. 7.9/ Marcel with Shoes on
8. 7.8/ TAR
9. 7.8/ The Batman
10.7.8/ Pinocchio
11.7.8/ All Quiet on Western Front
12. (I believe Glass Onion is gonna get in too)December 18, 2022 at 4:51 am #1205199617Saw Avatar 2.
1st 45 minutes are whatever. But after that? Once we get to the islands, I felt like watching a totally different movie.
Best CGI ever. It’s stupidly breath-taking
Plot is unremarkable indeed. BUT. I think it works really well here. The family themes really connected and I found myself crying a couple of times.
It’s so simple but just very well executed.
The kid characters are not annoying. Cameron should be proud for that alone lol. I really liked the kids. All have their own personality.
But the best character? Nature. The environment. Never has a movie made me feel this way. The whales…if you don’t like whales for some reason,.you will leave this movie loving them. Everything is so beautiful and precious. Landscape, sea, the animals. You love and care for it all.
I was so invested in the kids just discovering the sea. Adapting to this side of Pandora. Everything looked so GOOD.
I don’t know. This movie hit me different.

I literally cried too during the movie. I wasn’t ready for that
December 18, 2022 at 7:06 am #1205199674The underwater scenes in Avatar are remarkable! I agree with those who sys that the plot is so so but gave more room for the actors develope the different characters. It was an emotional ending that took me by surprise because the plot is so simple yet universal.
I will jump of joy if The Fabelmans get completely shut out come nomination day

Darling, that cruel, whale-like-fish hunting scene literally makes me cry and truly hates humanity lol (yes, it’s happen in real life too… and it’s worse).
December 18, 2022 at 10:01 am #1205199790Not a popular opinion on here, but I thought last year’s BP lineup, and the movies in general that were contention were probably one of the worst I’ve seen in my lifetime. Besides Drive My Car everything else was a bore or just plain “mid”/mediocre
You’re not the only one darling. For me, only DMC and CODA that I love and truly moves me. The other one are a bunch of perfect sleeping pills.
December 18, 2022 at 10:09 am #1205199798I’m kind of jaw-dropped 90% of this forum is in love with Avatar 2. Completely unexpected. I’m starting to wonder are Oscar voters also loving it.

Both Avatar 2 and The Fabelmans deserve and will get noms on that day. The Fabelmans getting shut out is just not gonna happen.

The funny thing is that I’ve been the biggest supporter of Avatar 2 on this forum, and yet I thought it was just good. And yet, the love its getting even also on social media makes me think Cameron is def getting in for Director.
