Can someone please explain that Ke Huy Quan frontrunner thing to me? (Genuinely) Because I’ve not even had him getting nominated yet this season. I just never would have expected when I saw the film and the reaction to it (which Yeoh and Hsu dominated) that he would suddenly become so many people’s number one. Someone give me the down low please

Quan is in the best position narratively, in a BP contender, a standout in the film, and is in that sweet spot with a lot of screentime for a supporting role. I’d like to see what the critics end up doing though. He doesn’t need to be the critics leader by any means, but it would confirm that he’s where most (including me) think he is.

See the critics picking him would weirdly make more sense to me as those kinds of awards are so often dominated by “oh we need to award this film somewhere” in a way that the industry isn’t so diplomatic. I guess I also don’t really buy his supposed “narrative” as well. Seems like a comeback that the internet would care about more than actual actors

I’d be curious about what you think EEAAO’s overall prospects are for other categories (specifically Yeoh, Original Screenplay, and Best Picture)?

Women Talking, Fablemans, and Banshees are all notable contenders in the Supporting category and have good chances at other wins. If EEAAO ends up weaker across the board, it only strengthens the case that Quan could take it as a representative above the line win in this category when there’s already limited buzz or urgency to award others.

For me, Quan’s position is just as much informed by other contenders just not checking off enough boxes as it is about his own chances.

The film has always been seen as the Yeoh/Quan film, which explains why only them have been in the winning conversation unlike Hsu. He has passion, his category is far weaker than Yeoh’s and the film is made for the acting branch.

His role is the most sympathetic one, Joy is miserable and Evelyn is a real bitch, so the fact Waymond still tries to make them happy, especially his wife, who simply throws all her anger and frustrations towards him for no reason at all than being unhappy with her choices, makes him such a heartwarming character.

His scene of “I don’t know what’s going on but I know it’s my fault” breaks your heart because it reflects how Evelyn has mistreated him, blaming him for everything.

When he speaks how he wishes people will just treat each other more kindly and then when he saves Evelyn after she broke the window and the cops arrive, proves what a good man Waymond is and makes you love him even more.

He is the soul of the film.

I think it’s winning all three, which may also be why I don’t get the Ke Huy Quan thing? Seems like lots are predicting him as the representative for his film whereas I think EEAAO is going to take the season by storm so doesn’t need to win supporting actor as well.

I thought this might be the case! Your take on Quan makes a lot of sense in this situation because if EEAAO does really well, I think Quan’s chances might drop a bit just because there may be some temptation to look elsewhere (like if Apple pushed Tyree Henry hard, I could genuinely see it).

I’m just personally not sold on Original Screenplay yet, which seems like it will be decisive for BP. I think Yeoh and Quan could potentially win together.

he’s amazing, and not just as a consolation prize.

It’s not like a Brendan Fraser thing where people are like “well I liked his action movies as a kid and Hollywood was bad to him so they should make up for it.”

It’s not that they’re voting for Goonies/Indiana Jones. It’s the inspiring story of a guy who quit acting acting for almost 20 years because of a lack of opportunities, and now he’s back and absolutely killing it in his second chance, while being a middle-aged POC which isn’t exactly the primo position to be in.

It’s akin to the reigning winner, who also considered quitting due to lack of chances in Hollywood before landing this movie that ended up getting tons of love for such an underdog. There were people who were saying Kotsur would be the consolation prize for the film, and then it won BP/Writing too.

This. Also, former refugee (along with Chau) pushing through obstacles for their craft. So happy to see him shaping up to be this season’s golden boy.

This! And also the line “So, even though you have broken my heart yet again, I wanted to say, in another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you” is just perfect synergy between writing and acting. People were whispering ‘awww’ in the theater.

Darling, don’t make me bawled my eyes again.

So so happy for Ke Huy Quan!! I really hope he steamrolls the competition and deservedly wins everything this season… I feel like he has SAG easily and the Critics will probably award him too. I just wonder about BAFTA and the Globes (you never know with them, lol)… But in the end, I think he will grab the Oscar. He has the performance, a wonderful narrative and he’s beyond likable… Gleeson is a great #2 for the season but it’s Quan’s time.

Everyone’s going to tear up when they play it right before he walks on stage to deliver another touching speech.

Quan received way more buzz than Hsu at the time of the film’s release.

This will be go down as the best Oscar clips of all time darling… can’t wait.

Except… if the SlapShow have their own choices lol (Like for example, I’m really sure they will use that overused “the snotty angry” scene of Snotty Davis from Fences back in 2017. instead, they choose the more understated one (that scene after the her husband funeral I think).
