Are Dern and Kirby even going to campaign? Dern obviously is an influential member of the academy but she just got her Oscar and I can’t imagine she’ll care enough when she’s producing so many projects right now and Kirby didn’t even go to TIFF.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

September 14, 2022 at 11:26 pm #1205084403Give me Stephanie Hsu and Hong Chau please oscar gods make them Academy Award nominees!
September 15, 2022 at 1:39 am #1205084429As someone who thinks Claire Foy was snubbed for First Man, I am really delighted to see the reviews praising her and hope that the Academy better not mess this up.
September 15, 2022 at 4:16 am #1205084484Lmfao The Son is done. Reviews are saying that was Dern’s worst performance ever. McGrath omg bless him poor boy but that performance was abysmal. Jackman’s performance was annoying and manipulative asf. Only Kirby has a decent performance but even that is quite a longshot.
September 15, 2022 at 4:48 am #1205084508This series of frames with Hsu truly is such a standout for me. Reminds me so much of a similar (and familiar) emotional state I was once in. It’s incredible how a glance can communicate so much!
September 15, 2022 at 5:48 am #1205084552Strangely, after seeing Woman Talking Matt Neglia puts Buckley #2 and Foy #5. It seems that really they are equally the standouts, tho. Rooting for them both and for the incredible Hong Chau.
Jodie Comer, Elisabeth Moss, Carey Mulligan, Alicia Vikander supremacy

He actually has them both 2nd and 3rd respectively. That’s just a combined ranking of all the contributors on Next Best Picture, some of whom don’t seem to have updated their predictions since the film premiered.

Which makes sense. GoldDerby was the same way, largely based on Buckley’s previous nomination.
September 15, 2022 at 8:52 am #1205084772Hong Chau had 3 films that premiered at 3 different major festivals. Showing Up premiered at Cannes, The Whale premiered at Venice, and The Menu premiered at TIFF. If that’s not legend behavior, I don’t know what is. I REALLY hope she gets nominated for The Whale. It’s nice to know she’s still garnering raves with audiences at TIFF for the film.

I can see her doing extremely well with the trifecta, since they usually like to combine different works. Laura Dern winning NYFCC and NSFC for both Marriage Story and Little Women, Jessica Chastain sweeping for Take Shelter, The Help and The Tree of Life (LAFCA actually rewarded her for all the movies she had that year), Isabelle Huppert sweeping as well for both Elle and Things to Come, etc.

Interestingly, this was a pickup shot that the Daniels realized they needed while they were in editing in post. The shot of Hsu in the car wasn’t even originally supposed to be in the movie.
Also, this giggle/smile she gives after beating the officer with giant dildos wasn’t scripted either. The Daniels had already called cut, but decided to keep her impromptu reaction in the final edit.
Just another little reason in my book why Stephanie Hsu is an indispensible aspect of EEAAO as much as Yeoh and Quan are.
