One Asian, one black veteran, one white veteran, one black rising star and one steady working underrated actress. Love the diversity. None of them previous nominees.
Darling Bassett was snubbed for What’s Love Got To Do With It😭

All are amazing too and 4 are comedic performances which is atypical of the academy
December 15, 2022 at 11:24 am #1205196315I don’t know if anyone has pointed this out but recently we’ve usually had someone in this category who makes it in at the Globes and SAG but misses at the Oscars:
2022: Caitriona Balfe and Ruth Negga
2021: Helena Zengel
2020: Jennifer Lopez
2019: No one
2018: Hong Chau
2017: No one
2016: Helen MirrenI’m expecting Carey Mulligan to continue this trend this year and get in at SAG but get snubbed at the Oscars but if there’s a second person who joins her, like in this category last year, who would it be?
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.

Kerry Condon – The Banshees of Inisherin
Jamie Lee Curtis – Everything Everywhere All At Once
Olivia DeJonge – Elvis
Stephanie Hsu – Everything Everywhere All At Once
Jean Smart – BabylonLast year’s winner was… Judi Dench
December 15, 2022 at 11:31 am #1205196331This is a fascinating race and very exciting…
Current thinking:
1. Kerry Condon
2. Angela Bassett
3. Jamie Lee Curtis
~
then who on earth knows anymore… but I’ll hazard a guess…
4. Jessie Buckley
5. Stephanie Hsu
6. Janelle Monae
7. Clare Foy
8. Dolly DeLeon
9. Carrie Mulligan
10. Thuso Mbedu
11. Hong Chau
12. Jean Smart
13. Gabrielle Union
14. Lashana Lynch
15. Nina HossCurrent thoughts on who might win…
Globes: Jamie Lee Curtis
Critics: Kerry Condon
SAG: Angela Bassett
BAFTA: Condon
Oscar: Condon or BassettDecember 15, 2022 at 11:38 am #1205196354Lol imagine if Jean Smart wins and then shows up at the Oscars like Dench did in spite of getting blanked by the precursors. Interesting they spammed Babylon in acting but ignored the film and Chazelle.
Obviously not changing predictions based on these but I think Hsu getting in here feels very telling as to how much passion she has. AACTA is even poorer than the HFPA when it comes to recognising BIPOC contenders (if I’m not mistaken they didn’t even nominate Yuh-jung Youn two years ago) and they have a STRONG bias towards their British/Irish veterans even randomly nominating Saoirse Ronan for Ammonite a couple of years ago. For them to recognise Hsu when they could have just ignored her for Buckley or for Mulligan or Foy (or even their vice-president Nicole Kidman who they randomly threw a nomination for Nine Perfect Strangers last year or any eligible Australian actor) is quite a feat.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
December 15, 2022 at 11:50 am #1205196397Not that AACTA is the Hail Mary but Hsu getting in here is astounding! She’s going to comfortably stay in my top 5. And if Curtis is already comfortable for a nom, Hsu only coattails (could possibly rank above her in final voting, that’s assuming both are nominated).

I love that Kerry Condon is getting in everywhere! (: This is the first I have seen of Jean Smart being nominated anywhere – so looking forward to seeing Babylon!
December 15, 2022 at 12:00 pm #1205196430Hsu and Curtis are getting in if racist AACTA nominated Hsu. Also its the first industry award unlike the Globes.

Praying it happens. GG loves Banshees so I’m feeling her there. I don’t buy three acting Globes for EEAAO.
December 15, 2022 at 12:54 pm #1205196564As a fan since this movie I gotta say it still feels surreal and amazing that Kerry is finally going to get her dues 😍
FYC:
Zar Amir Ebrahimi - Holy Spider (Best Actress)
Ana de Armas, Julianne Nicholson - Blonde (Best Actress, Supporting Actress)
Samantha Morton - She Said (Best Supporting Actress)
Kerry Condon - The Banshees of Inisherin (Best Supporting Actress)December 15, 2022 at 1:28 pm #1205196676Starting to think Jean Smart will sneak in at SAG. They love a good double nomination (she did it just last year), and she’s probably winning again for Hacks. She also feels JUST like Cate Blanchett in Nightmare Alley / Bradley Cooper in Licorice Pizza, both in who she is (a veteran they love) and her position in the race (a very buzzy contender earlier in the season that we’ve largely written off by now but is still poised to surprise). Those other two actors were the only nominations for their films, and I am expecting at least Robbie to also make it in here, but I think the comparison still stands.
FYC: The Bear (Ayo Edebiri) Industry (Marisa Abela) OMITB (Jayne Houdyshell) Physical (Rose Byrne) WWDITS (Natasia Demetriou)
December 15, 2022 at 1:29 pm #1205196678Ugh I’m sorry just gonna say it: I think Condon is deserving of a nomination, but this is 100% a performance people will forget once this awards season is over. I just don’t get why it should win when we have people who played more interesting characters and nailed it (Hsu and De Leon specifically).
