Maybe, but I don’t think so. Kitty Oppenheimer was a very complex figure. When she married Oppenheimer at age 30, he was her FOURTH husband. She was born in Germany and had falsely claimed that her father was a Prince and her mother a relative of Queen Victoria. She was a botanist and biologist— a scientist in her own right. She was also a member of the American Communist party; one of her husbands was killed in 1937 fighting in the Spanish Civil War, and in 1934, the couple had lived in a boarding house down the hall from their friend Gus Hall, who became General Secretary of the Communist Party USA. Kitty’s affiliation with the CP was one of the reasons that Oppenheimer was suspected of being a Russian Spy and had difficulty getting and keeping security clearances. I haven’t seen the screenplay, but it seems extremely unlikely this will be a typical “wife of a great man” role for Blunt.
Hadn’t known this, and I hope you’re right Rachel, I would love that for Blunt. Still not holding my breath considering Nolan’s not especially known for character development (again, especially for females).

Just to echo what’s been said. I think I agree with you both; this shouldn’t be a case of another nothing female character, she’s an absolutely fascinating woman in her own right (maybe more than her husband, honestly – her life story is amazing – literally just scan her Wiki intro; more twists and turns than Tenet) and I think Nolan should and will get criticised quite heavily if he brushes her aside.
That said, Nolan has shown no real signs of being able to, or wanting to, translate that to the screen in the past. However, this is, I think, the first time he’s had a real-life female character with evident depth there for him to start with, so it’s probably the best chance for him to prove critics wrong in that respect. Helps he has a brilliant actor in the role too with Blunt.

Hmm…maybe I’ll reconsider and watch. Like Nolan, LOVE Blunt.

But I don’t know why Blunt wasn’t featured in the trailer. I’m really scared for her

The trailer is exclusively shots of Cillian Murphy at the building of the atomic bomb; you don’t get much sense of any of the supporting cast there.
All that said, Nolan has never been the kind of director who gets people acting nominations, so I’m not really expecting that to start now.

I’m not necessarily expecting it, but it could happen here with Murphy and Blunt. He’s never had two characters more compelling than this to tackle. I think if the film is an awards hit it will be because he has really dug in to the complexities of those two characters and the heavy moral questions weighing on them. They’ve both got a good chance.
January 29, 2023 at 7:50 am #1205273393to be fair, regardless of perceived quality, he’s only done one obvious awards bait before this, dunkirk. per a random google i did, screentime wise, the only person who broke 10 minutes was fionn whitehead at 21 mins, and he was still a teen during filming.
and this one is Based on Real People so another step up for baitiness.
January 29, 2023 at 10:30 am #1205273647When has a Nolan film ever been an actor’s play?
I don’t see anyone getting nominated for that.January 29, 2023 at 11:18 am #1205273705lmao at y’all talking about next year’s supporting actress race bc this one is pretty much locked up.
January 29, 2023 at 11:31 am #12052737312024 Supporting Actress predictions:
Marion Cotillard, Lee
Lily Gladstone, Killers of the Flower Moon (WINNER)
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, The Holdovers
Taraji P. Henson, The Color Purple
Julianne Moore, May DecemberJanuary 29, 2023 at 1:42 pm #1205273874i mean, you could have said “since when is spielberg actors bait” after oscar nominated blockbusters jaws/raiders/et. but then he started going into pedigreed awards bait with color purple.
January 29, 2023 at 2:19 pm #1205273903I would have thought, Memento, Insomnia, Inception etc but the stellar actors keep missing.
But his films are up for Oscars a lot. So who knows? The Sunne in Splendour.
I prefer my roses whiteJanuary 29, 2023 at 2:23 pm #1205273905all of those are genre-y fare, not awards bait.
i don’t even particularly like nolan, but it’s obvious his movies largely are meant to be crowdpleasers, not chasing awards.
January 29, 2023 at 2:34 pm #1205273915Angela has such an amazing filmography if you ask me. Classic films such as How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Vampire In Brooklyn, Boys in the Hood, What’s Love Got to Do With It, Malcom X, Strange Days, Akeelah and the Bee, Black Panther, Black Panther and many more. She is a freaking cinematic LEGEND. So happy for her.

Call me crazy, but I simply cannot shake the feeling that Bassett is going to lose on March 12th. I do not think she is as much a lock as many people believe she is. The only person I consider a lock for an acting Oscar is in Supporting Actor with Ke Huy Quan.
I still have a hard time seeing the Academy awarding an Oscar to a role from a comic book movie. I know she is Angela Bassett, but if she is really going to win an Oscar, this just does not feel like the role it will be for.
She also has some truly stellar competition in Hong Chau, Kerry Condon, and Stephanie Hsu. I can honestly see any of them winning. I am leaning towards Hong Chau. They clearly did not love The Whale, but still loved her enough to nominate her.
For the record, I generally enjoyed Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and thought Bassett was fine in it. But her role has never felt like an Oscar winning role, and I still cannot shake that feeling. Chalk it up to gut instinct, but I see her being upset when they announce Supporting Actress.
