Call me crazy, but I simply cannot shake the feeling that Bassett is going to lose on March 12th. I do not think she is as much a lock as many people believe she is. The only person I consider a lock for an acting Oscar is in Supporting Actor with Ke Huy Quan.
I still have a hard time seeing the Academy awarding an Oscar to a role from a comic book movie. I know she is Angela Bassett, but if she is really going to win an Oscar, this just does not feel like the role it will be for.
She also has some truly stellar competition in Hong Chau, Kerry Condon, and Stephanie Hsu. I can honestly see any of them winning. I am leaning towards Hong Chau. They clearly did not love The Whale, but still loved her enough to nominate her.
For the record, I generally enjoyed Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and thought Bassett was fine in it. But her role has never felt like an Oscar winning role, and I still cannot shake that feeling. Chalk it up to gut instinct, but I see her being upset when they announce Supporting Actress.
Please snap out of it. If Angela doesn’t win, I’ll put my foot through the television set.

Hi, crazy!

They’re in so much heat for snubbing Deadwyler and Davis that I find it hard to believe they would deny Bassett an Oscar now, especially after she’s established herself as the frontrunner.
They probably want to quell the “Oscars are racist” accusations, not add more fuel to the fire.
January 29, 2023 at 10:53 pm #1205274251Finally saw Women Talking and, though I’m happy Jamie Lee Curtis finally got a nom, the fact that JLC got nominated over genuinely any cast member of Women Talking is a sin.

Once Bassett wins SAG people will feel a lot more sure. She doesn’t even need BAFTA to win.

Lol. Keep dreaming. If Laura Dern could sweep with that nonexistent performance, there’s no reason to question Legend Bassett here. I haven’t seen The Whale, but she’s better than the other three and the nomination is obviously the reward for Hong Chau. You’re dreaming if you think Chau has a chance in this race

January 30, 2023 at 12:53 pm #1205274989Bassett will easily win SAG. She is such a SAG-y choice, and that will propel her to an Oscar win.

No offense, but how can you judge Hong Chau’s performance when you have not even seen The Whale. I think for most of us here who have seen the Whale, we would agree she was pretty damn good in the movie. Plus, her role is more of a classic Oscar bait type role they generally tend to award. She also got great reviews and attention for her role in “The Menu”, which can never hurt.
Again, if they loved her enough to nominate her form a film they clearly did not care much for, I think she has as legitimate a chance as any of the contenders. I believe both her and Kerry Condon have very legitimate chances of winning the Oscar and upsetting Bassett.
Didn’t we all assume Glenn Close was a lock a couple of years ago and she eventually lost. And everyone knows there was certainly more urgency to award Close that year than there is Bassett this year.

Exactly, she will win SAG and that will be more than enough to get the Oscar.
January 30, 2023 at 5:57 pm #1205275347There’s no need to keep going back and forth with people who continue to cleary hopedict. Bassett will get hers on March 12.
January 30, 2023 at 6:33 pm #1205275401What’s with this “this is a Marvel movie” talk? Wasn’t Black Panther the first Marvel movie to get major award recognition just a few years ago? Wasn’t it up for Best Picture, despite being a Marvel movie? Didn’t Angela hit every precursor needed to be a strong contender here? What difference does it make? There seems to be more respect when it comes to the Blank Panther franchise than any other franchise in the Marvel universe. Just prepare to be mad when Angela wins her first Oscar for this movie.
January 30, 2023 at 7:46 pm #1205275473^For what it’s worth, I love comic book movies and have seen nearly every one of them over the past 20 plus years since they became all the rage. As much as I love them, I can also accept they are pretty basic, and sometimes low-brow, entertainment. I agree Black Panther was elevated fare compared to the normal Marvel film, but I do not believe it raised the bar that much.
And also, when I am making predictions here, it has nothing to do with what I like or hope. In case anyone is wondering, I am personally rooting for Stephanie Hsu from EEAAO. Although I am not predicting her for various reasons. My predictions are based solely off my gut instincts. And I am predicting a major upset this year in the Supporting Actress category. Like I originally said above, I may just be crazy and may be completely wrong here. I have not ultimately decided between Chau or Condon but will eventually make up my mind.
Being these predictions are nothing personal, I would not be upset or disappointed if Bassett wins on March 12th. I have always enjoyed her and admired her. Being these predictions are all just fun and games in the end, I will not be pressed if Bassett wins. And if she wins, I sure hope she looks damn good doing so.
January 31, 2023 at 5:40 am #1205275720If Judd Hirsch can be nominated for a Supporting Actor for one scene in The Fabelmans, then why not Samantha Norton for She Said? It is one of the most extraordinary performances I have seen this past year.

There’s a small supporting performance thread on this site that I post in every year to highlight the best performances with the shortest run time I’ve seen in the season but this year I don’t even feel like doing it because Morton’s performance is as good as you can get.
FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
