She was better in THE WHALE.
January 31, 2023 at 6:33 am #1205275762Let’s remember Chadwick Boseman. Everyone said same thing, he even had the posthumous factor, and he won everything(except BAFTA) leading up to Oscar. DO NOT think Bassett is a done deal. Many are already chattering “this isn’t an Oscar worthy performance”

I prefer my roses whiteJanuary 31, 2023 at 12:37 pm #1205276255Pretty funny how previous “career wins” (also deserving though) were accepted as a done deal but there’s still a lot of naysayers for Angela Bassett. It’s even worse on twitter
People are naysaying Laura Dern a lot in 2019. I remember people were insisting JLo was gonna win the Globe, and then after she fizzled out people were speculating that Florence Pugh could somehow surge or that ScarJo would win because she was double nominated.
I think some people just really do not want a Marvel movie performance to win.
January 31, 2023 at 1:40 pm #1205276346Legend Bassett’s breakdown after Shuri was taken by the Talokans sealed it for her.
Have I not given everything? Masterclass acting.
I’m happy she’s unexpectedly winning. Disney didn’t bother campaigning for her after the film came out because they didn’t have faith in her despite strong personal reviews. They only started pushing her after movie fans started praising her.
Goldderby experts slept on her all along. I was among the first who mentioned her in one of the earlier threads. I said it here that she had given a strong performance and everyone said she wasn’t getting nominated.
I love how this played out. Oscar winner Angela Bassett sounds so right.

January 31, 2023 at 4:48 pm #1205278748Call me crazy, but I simply cannot shake the feeling that Bassett is going to lose on March 12th. I do not think she is as much a lock as many people believe she is. The only person I consider a lock for an acting Oscar is in Supporting Actor with Ke Huy Quan. I still have a hard time seeing the Academy awarding an Oscar to a role from a comic book movie. I know she is Angela Bassett, but if she is really going to win an Oscar, this just does not feel like the role it will be for. She also has some truly stellar competition in Hong Chau, Kerry Condon, and Stephanie Hsu. I can honestly see any of them winning. I am leaning towards Hong Chau. They clearly did not love The Whale, but still loved her enough to nominate her. For the record, I generally enjoyed Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and thought Bassett was fine in it. But her role has never felt like an Oscar winning role, and I still cannot shake that feeling. Chalk it up to gut instinct, but I see her being upset when they announce Supporting Actress.
Yea i’m going to go ahead and call you crazy…
January 31, 2023 at 6:17 pm #1205278847Naysayers are just butt hurt that a MCU performance will win an Oscar. My advice: get over it. Angela has earned this moment. Can’t wait to call her an Academy Award winner!
January 31, 2023 at 6:42 pm #1205278865After rewatching EEAAO for the first time since the theatrical run. Stephanie Hsu is maybe one of the best acting nominations in Oscar history. I was shocked how much of her performance. She was absolutely fantastic.
Yes, I know that Angela Basset is the frontrunner, but I’d love to see Hsu as a surprise win.

Could not agree more about Stephanie Hsu. I remember watching the movie for the first time and thinking damn not only did she just deliver a star making performance but she also gave what I consider to he one of the best performances of all time in any medium. She is so deserving and words cannot explain how much I would love for her to win!
January 31, 2023 at 7:45 pm #1205278932Hsu and Curtis will cancel each other out. For some reason, Film Twitter loves Hsu but the industry love seems to be with Curtis. Condon hasn’t really mustered up enough buzz outside of critics to win a competitive award like this. Perhaps, she can win BAFTA and start up some spoiler talk. I don’t think The Whale is that strong, and if the voters gives it an award, it would be Best Actor, not Supporting Actress. Hong Chau is out.
There seems to be growing industry buzz around Angela being the first actor to propel the Marvel series to an acting Oscar. Plus, she has a ton of industry pals from those Marvel franchises and has dominated TV for years now. Angela is a no-brainer at this point.
January 31, 2023 at 8:25 pm #1205278962I do think Hsu or Condon can take BAFTA but thats it.
