no one knows kerry condon while actors who surprise like olivia or mark rylance are known by most actors from smaller independent film or theatre television roles
Maybe not enough people know her, but many remember Condon from Better Call Saul, or Three Billboards, or even as Octavia in Rome.
I just think it’s Angela Bassett’s time, and as great as Condon is in Banshees, Bassett will win, and would do so even if Condon was more widely known.
February 4, 2023 at 2:54 pm #1205284150I mean I don’t think it’s smart to call ANYTHING a lock when we haven’t even gotten any industry award winners yet, but Bassett is definitely looking like a solid frontrunner.
The Globes is an industry award. That is where everyone’s momentum kicks off. They made Legend Bassett a frontrunner. I’m tired of people here not seeing the Globes (easily the biggest and most watched precursor) as an industry thing when they’re the reason so many people won Oscars. Legend Bassett is 100% locked and deservedly so

February 4, 2023 at 3:02 pm #1205284165I just finished watching BP:WF and we really played ourselves by not predicting Bassett for a nomination pre – nomination. The consensus is that she is winning because of narrative and that makes me believe that people in these forums haven’t seen the film. She is truly magnificent , her delivery of the line “ your brother is with the ancestors” alone was enough to make a case for why she deserved to be nominated and that’s just the first two minutes of the film. The whole funeral sequence followed by the UN meeting, its literally clip after clip for her which comes to a climatic peak in her Big Oscar scene ( you all know which one, that’s how brilliant she is) I really hope she wins, she has the performance plus the narrative.
I knew she was going to be a thing when I first saw the film in November. GD experts just slept on her because of the genre thing. I was just laughing when I saw no one here predicting her because she has more Oscar scenes than anybody else in this category and she got enough screentime too. Her most underrated moment is when she went to see Nakia (Lupita), but the climatic peak scene is where Oscar clip peaked so gracefully

February 4, 2023 at 3:02 pm #1205284169The year Frank Sinatra won in ’53 for “From Here to Eternity”…could he have been the Johnny Fontaine character in The Godfather? Like so many believe?

Watch EEAAO on the Academy Screening Room app and join the groundswell of support to honor Stephanie Hsu’s fine work.
I do think Hsu can take BAFTA
100% Agreed. Stephanie Hsu could definitely surprise at BAFTA where she wasn’t nominated. If she does, then it’s game over for Bassett.

I think the difference is that year, Rylance was the only one nominated in all the main precursors AND his main competitor was the only nomination for his movie.
Maybe Condon can win, but it would be completely different to Rylance situation.

Reminds me of how Kodi Smit McPhee and Benedict Cumberbatch were supposed to win BAFTA last year…

Darling, you spelled Laura Dern in Marriage Story, Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle, Michelle Williams in The Fabelmans, Will Smith in King Richard, Jessica Chastain in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Amy Adams and Sam Rockwell in Vice, Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody, Javier Bardem, JK Simmons and Nicole Kidman in Being The Ricardos, wrong.
February 8, 2023 at 9:16 am #1205297231I am so happy Williams dropped out
I mean.. next month we are going to get Academy winner Angela Bassett (fingers crossed)! What’s more delightful than that?

It is not an industry award in the sense that industry people do not vote on it. There is 0 overlap between Academy voters and golden globe voters. OF COURSE the golden globes are significant in getting momentum started and they absolutely matter, but it is just a fact that they are not voted on by any industry folks who also vote for the oscars, unlike SAG and BAFTA. Too many films/performances have won at Critics Choice and/or Golden Globes and seemed like the frontrunner just to get derailed once actual industry voters weigh in (Natalie Portman, Jessica Chastain, Jodie Foster, Kodi Smit McPhee, Sylvester Stallone, Boyhood, The Social Network etc) for us to ignore it.
I do think Bassett is the frontrunner and will most likely win SAG, but I stand by that calling anyone a “lock” before we’ve heard from any of the organizations that actually share membership with the academy is foolish.
