So according to The Oscar Expert youtube channel, these are the contenders for Original Score at this point:
1. Empire of Light (Thomas Newman)
2. Babylon (Justin Hurwitz)
3. The Fabelmans (John Williams)
4. Women Talking (Hildur Guonadottir)
5. The Batman (Michael Giacchino)
6. Killers of the Flower Moon (Robbie Robertson)
7. Top Gun: Maverick (Hans Zimmer, Lady Gaga, Harold Faltmeyer)
8. Pinocchio (Alexandre Desplat)
9. Avatar: The Way of Water (Simon Franglen)
10. Everything Everywhere All At Once (Son Lux)
11. Bardo (Bryce Dessner)
12. Nope (Michael Abels)
13. The Lost King (Alexandre Desplat)
14. Don’t Worry Darling (John Powell)
I of course would like to offer Turning Red for consideration because Ludwig Göransson has won the Oscar before and Disney and Pixar animated movies are strong in this category historically.
ReplyJune 24, 2022 at 1:10 am #1204994865I’m not sure I really see much stopping Thomas Newman from winning this category. He has been nominated 15 times, many of those times for films that are considered iconic classics today, and has to yet to win. This also makes him the second most nominated person of all time to not win an Oscar. I’m expecting Empire of Light to be a big contender (given Mendes’ trajectory for 1917) and Searchlight’s priority for the season, especially now that Poor Things has been moved to 2023. It seems that a few other contenders in the top 10 have won relatively recently, which might make Newman’s narrative to finally win more obvious, especially with the strength I’m predicting the movie will have. I think this is his to lose.

ReplyCopy URLJune 28, 2022 at 1:35 pm #1204998817Articles have been out recently about John Williams possibly retiring after Indiana Jones 5. While he could get in for that, The Fablemans would be a huge chance for an Academy goodbye especially since it could be his last collaboration with Spielberg.

Last year, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste won (Soul) and all 3 was creditated.
However, analyzing the amount of credits as songwriter/producer in the songs (4), even though Gaga is considered a performer (8/8) and composer (3/8) of the score, I am in doubt if she will manage to be nominated… but I think the Oscars are not so critical about it (when compared to the Emmys, which ask for a minimum percentage of participation in songwriting, for example).
Anyway, part of Top Gun Maverick’s score contains remakes of the first film, which could guarantee Ggaa’s participation given her involvement in the “new tracks” (3/6).

With that said, how on earth did Michael Giacchino miss a nomination for Inside Out back in 2015?

Women TalkingJuly 3, 2022 at 3:20 pm #1205002995I wonder if TÁR doesn’t lean too much on classical compositions, it could easily be Hildur Guðnadóttir’s stronger contender this year (though double nominations for this alongside Women Talking can also happen).

ReplyCopy URLAugust 27, 2022 at 2:25 pm #1205056562Predictions for the Saturday before the festivals
Best Original Score
– Danny Elfman for White Noise
– Hildur Guðnadóttir for Women Talking
– Justin Hurwitz for Babylon
*** John Williams for The Fabelmans
– Hans Zimmer for The SonSpoiler(s): Michael Giacchino for The Batman, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross for Empire of Light,
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 3, 2022 at 3:18 pm #1205064942Considering the fact that John Williams is going to be retiring from doing scores very soon, I do not really see anyone other than Williams winning as a sort of “farewell hug” for him, even if the score is subpar. Or at least getting a nomination.

(Yes, really. MAKE IT HAPPEN OSCARS!)September 12, 2022 at 9:17 pm #1205081047Reactions to All Quiet on the Western Front indicate that Volker Bertelmann’s score is a stand-out element
He’s a previous nominee for Lion

C’Mon, Michael Giachinno should be the frontrunner… this forum is terrible for the art of cinema

The Batman‘s score is effective and memorable, but the main theme is essentially a reworking of Darth Vader’s music.
That being said, for the amount of times that Michael Giachinno has been snubbed in recent years, the nomination would be a welcome one.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 13, 2022 at 4:49 pm #1205082641Right now I have the following in my personal predictions, though it’s hard to really say this early on:
John Williams – The Fabelmans
Hildur Guðnadóttir – Women Talking/Tár (Maybe both?)
Carter Burwell – Banshees of Inisherin
Alexandre Desplat – Pinocchio (Del Toro’s version – apparently he wrote the songs, too)
Babylon – Justin Hurwitz
Other potential contenders: Reznor & Ross (Bones and All) OR (Empire of Light,) Michael Giacchino (The Batman – was great but may be forgotten by now,) Bryce Dessner (Bardo – could still get in despite film,) Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Ludwig Goransson,) Terrance Blanchard (The Woman King – people seem divided on this one,) Colin Stetson (The Menu)
Anything else that people can think of?
