If there is One category I feel pretty confident The Fabelmans isn’t a threat to win, it’s Original Screenplay. This was one mediocre script, and no one is talking about it! It’s one of the most basic scripts this season, basic dialogue, basic characters, basic storyline, basic conclusion. Basic, basic, basic!
I did the unthinkable and moved it down to 5. I cannot believe this screenplay is as high on the rankings that it is. The Power Of Spielberg I guess.I think a big part of the reason The Fabelman’s screenplay is ranked as high as it is, is because it was co-written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony winning playwright Tony Kushner, who wrote Angels in America, and had previously received screenplay Oscar nominations for Munich and Lincoln. He’s widely respected and a lot of people think he’s overdue.

TARI hated TAR, gave it a grade of F. Disliked every aspect, especially its’ pretentious drivel of a script. I expected to love it but I honestly hated every single moment of it. It’s this year’s inexpicable what are people thinking? movie for me, that has not one single redeemable aspect, not even Cate Blanchett, an actress who I usually love, but not as this awful despicable character!!!!
I just think The Fabelmans is too wobbly – some of the writing is really good but other parts of it are over-written…. jmho.

December 8, 2022 at 1:02 pm #1205183739Question: It’s looking like The Banshees of Inisherin may win OS, how does this bode for EEAO’s chances of winning BP? Surely it can’t win with a supporting actor and BP, right? Would think the Daniel’s would then take Director.

EEAAO will win just one Oscar.
December 8, 2022 at 5:06 pm #1205184364No film in the preferential ballot era has ever won BP without winning Screenplay or Director. So if EEAAO only wins Supporting Actor for Quan, that’s very likely not enough, but after CODA broke all those stats last year, anything might happen.
Babes, I would love to see a scenario where EEAAO (Daniels), TAR (Todd Field), and Banshees of Inishierin (Martin McDonagh) all split Picture, Director, and Screenplay, but that’s very unlikely to happen based on previous results. They all deserve Oscars, and if Quan/Blanchett/Farrell win Oscars, that’s not the same thing as the directors winning something.
Example:
Picture: Everything Everywhere Hons
Director: Todd Field
Original Screenplay: Martin McDonagh
Usually, it’s the winner takes both Picture/Director or Picture/Screenplay and then the other film wins the remaining category.

Direction is even less likely than screenplay, editing, or best actress for EEAAO.

I’m starting to wonder if there’s a chance that Adapted Screenplay doesn’t have any Best Picture nominees.
