I will only predict an Everything Everywhere loss if it loses at WGA. Otherwise, I think that film has so much passion behind it that Academy voters will look to reward it in as many places as possible. Films like Parasite and Birdman have already won Picture/Director/Screenplay with strong narratives and loads of acclaim. Plus Banshees can be rewarded in Supporting Actress.

March 3, 2023 at 11:54 am #1205330649I don’t know what the heck to do for Adapted. I can see All Quiet, Glass Onion, TGM, or Women Talking take it. You can make a case for any of those 4. I have women talking by default, but I’m inclined to change it, just can’t decide. Looking forward to WGA for more insight. Is anyone here going for Glass Onion or TGM? And if so, can you share why please?
The best case for either of them is to look at what WGA has gone for before in recent years. They like accessible and chatty screenplays, they don’t mind going for less prestigious stuff, and they’re way more open to comedies and genre fare.
Women Talking still checks a lot of boxes. I actually think the script is surprisingly funny for the subject matter, but it’s heavy and some don’t like the dialogue because they think it’s too unnatural. It’s the best case for Glass Onion, especially looking at the Don’t Look Up win last year. But I could also see them appreciating how TGM updated a decades old film for a wider, current audience.

March 4, 2023 at 11:21 pm #1205332524When Everything Everywhere wins WGA tomorrow I’ll be vindicated. Every film that’s won both SAG + WGA has won Screenplay, regardless of whether or not their biggest competitor was eligible or not (see Parasite when Hollywood wasn’t eligible). And this is the one award that I’ve been predicting for literally the entire year at that. Ever since I saw the movie for the first time back in April. I haven’t backed down all year and it’s gonna feel so good when it wins.

Everything Everywhere All at Once for everything, everywhere, all at onceMarch 5, 2023 at 5:29 am #1205332697WGA will give their award to EEAAO but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will win the Oscar. I still think there is a strong case to be made for Banshees winning as well. This category will be a nail-biter – I am still predicting Banshees but this is a no confidence prediction as it can go either way. I am just glad that both of the close races in the screenplay categories are absolutely wonderful films with excellent scripts this year! I would be happy with either of them winning and the same for Women Talking and All Quiet.

I’ve been predicting Daniels for Original Screenplay and Yeoh for Best Actress all year since I saw the film. Now it looks like I might get both right (funny that they’re two of the least secured wins for the film though)

When the movie has DGA + PGA + SAG + WGA? Nah I’m taking that to the bank. The movie would be way to strong at that point.

It could go either way – GG and BAFTA wins for Banshees where the two films were competing for screenplay awards and Banshees won both times is more convincing especially since Banshees isn’t eligible for WGA – DGA and PGA are not screenplay awards! There has definitely been a spreading of the Oscar gold wealth in recent years so I see BP and Director for EEAAO and OS for Banshees.

March 5, 2023 at 7:43 pm #1205333841I am sticking with my Banshees prediction but EEAAO could sweep. EEAAO winning WGA was expected. GG and BAFTA had both films nominated for Original Screenplay and Banshees won both of them. So it is entirely possible they will “spread the wealth” – as they have been doing over the past decade or so – and give the Daniels the Director award and McDonagh the writing award. Either way the winner will be an excellent choice.

Three Billboards won GG + BAFTA for Screenplay and lost at the Oscars to Get Out, which won CC + WGA, so there’s already a precedent for this race. Meanwhile no film has ever won WGA + CC for Original Screenplay and lost. That, plus the fact that Everything Everywhere is sweeping everything everywhere means that it’s the undeniable frontrunner in Original Screenplay now, and a very safe prediction.
