affleck’s had 3 movies with supporting acting noms, so viola would make sense. esp with the biopic factor.
March 19, 2023 at 11:42 pm #1205357541Only 2 women of color winning in the Academy’s 95 year history really broke bigots brains. I’m so happy that you are suffering.
I’m literally Asian so I was rooting for EEAAO at the academy awards. I forced all of my friends to watch the movie because the movie resonated with me deeply. This comment wasn’t really even about Yeoh, so you should stop assuming everyone is automatically racist. All of this year’s acting winners were chosen based on narrative, so this comment wasn’t about one specific actress or actor. We all know Jamie Lee Curtis didn’t win because of her performance. Although Cate might have given a better performance, I’m not complaining about Yeoh winning best actress. Sorry if I triggered you by making a simple observation lol
March 20, 2023 at 12:02 am #1205357549Isn’t The Piano Lesson in pre-production and filming hasn’t even started yet? I don’t know why everyone’s predicting it for this season when all the signs I’m seeing point to it being a 2024 release. Or is there something I don’t know?
Clayton Davis has predicted that Jackson will win BSA for The Piano Lesson so I assumed it would have a 2023 release but I should know better than to rely on Davis.
March 20, 2023 at 2:09 am #1205357593As a fellow Asian-Am, it’s clear a lot of the representation still draw on inspirations from the movie industries of the ancestral countries. It’s simply an economy of scale issue + ease of access/ibility (like kpop), just like no other conditions could’ve produced the HK and South Korean stars without thawing dictatorship and vibrant economies. Simu Liu is right, but he also wouldn’t have a top star career in China unless he did Jacky Wu style regime propaganda.
March 20, 2023 at 2:32 am #1205357595I want the prediction center to be open already.
Is it July yet?
March 20, 2023 at 2:49 am #1205357597Anyone know why they take so long to open the predictions center?
March 20, 2023 at 4:10 am #1205357615With the people attached to it, I don’t see Lee going very far.
They were all nominated for Oscars except the writers (Golden Globes). Otherwise, from the director to the editor, the cinematographer, the costume designer, the music composer and the makeup artist are all Oscars nominees! Plus, the supporting cast of Marion Cotillard, Alexander Skarsgård, Andrea Riseborough, Josh O’Connor and Andy Samberg is incredible!
But yeah, the problem is that there’s so many WW2 movie coming this year
March 20, 2023 at 6:40 am #1205357690So Cooper vs. Domingo?
March 20, 2023 at 6:59 am #1205357716She’s been like this for years at this point. All season she was basically saying the Oscars are over unless Top Gun 2 wins Best Picture.

March 20, 2023 at 8:28 am #12053578034 Other Contenders from this past week and this week:
1)Walk Up (foreign film contender at the least)
2)The Worst Ones (big question mark for me since it sounds intriguing and has a perfect score on RT)
3)Inside (Defoe apparantly is spectacular in this)
4) John Wick: Chapter 4 (Cinamotagrpahy)March 20, 2023 at 9:22 am #12053578654 Other Contenders from this past week and this week: 1)Walk Up (foreign film contender at the least) 2)The Worst Ones (big question mark for me since it sounds intriguing and has a perfect score on RT) 3)Inside (Defoe apparantly is spectacular in this) 4) John Wick: Chapter 4 (Cinamotagrpahy)
I’ve seen a lot about the John Wick cinematography. Dan Lausten is also doing The Color Purple….he just might take it this year with 2 big films.

Possible, but if The Batman, a film that was nominated in other categories, could not get a Cinematography nod, I doubt John Wick 4 will, especially since none of the other films in the franchise have received any Oscar nods (not even in Sound!).

This substack article by Sasha Stone gives you a good sense of her current thinking: https://sashastone.substack.com/p/the-best-film-of-the-year-that-wont#details
(I love the fact that she calls herself an Oscar expert yet she finished dead LAST among Gold Derby’s 33 experts, correctly predicting less than half of the winners, 8,895 out of 10,864 prognosticators.)
