Off topic but Audrey was so much better than Julia.
Nope, I loved Audrey’s performance but if you can’t sing you shouldn’t be headlining a musical. The same goes for Deborah Kerr in The King and I. I loved their performances but it would impress me more if they could perform the role completely by not being dubbed by the same singer…
I get it…star power…all that jazz…but they always feel hollow to me if their performances are dubbed

It reminds me exactly of the same fate of Blue Bayou

That movie had average reviews. Past Lives is a strong contender for critical darling of the season but we”ll have to wait and see if that translates into success with the industry awards

In her defence she took many voice lessons and was certain that her vocals will be included in the movie. She was devastated with the decision to replace it with Marni Nixon and that it was done behind her back. She reportedly also said that she wouldn’t take the role if she knew that her vocals will be dubbed. Those passages of her singing are good enough IMO and she’s been really strong in the movie anyway. I’m sure it was a bittersweet season for her – press was all about Hepburn vs. Andrews and for the first time went against Audrey. The movie was a smashing success (her only Best Picture) but she was not nominated. She was very brave and gracious to show up at the Oscars and not let the situation intimidate her. I think she deserves respect.

Kate Winslet — Lee
Margot Robbie — Barbie
Fantasia Barrino — The Color Purple
Nyad : Annette Bening (Lead) Jodie Foster (Supporting)
Lee : Kate Winslet (Lead) supporting :Andrea Riseborough, Marion Cotillard, Josh O’Connor, Andy Samberg, Alexander Skarsgård
Barbie: Margot Robbie (Lead) supporting : Ryan Gosling, Helen Mirren, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu
The Color Purple : Fantasia Barrino (Lead) supporting : Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Corey Hawkins, Colman Domingo, Ciara
I’m having issue about Fantasia Barrino position here, she didn’t have any movies on her belt, this is her first shot, hopefully The Color Purple team can handle it smoothly …
Greta Lee’ Past lives case :i feel like “academy” not in to it, it’s small romantic movie, if they get hype from Box Office success that’s different story, just like Pretty Woman (Julia Roberts) Ghost (Demi Moore) Titanic (Kate Winslet) or at least on par with Ethernal Sunshine of The spotless mind
Julia Roberts did a lot movies about RomCom and Academy didn’t care at all, so why does Academy love Greta Lee in Past Lives ? that’s a big question for me

Just out of curiosity, did you feel this way about Jamie Foxx in Ray? He’s an excellent singer but his vocals as Ray Charles were all dubbed in the movie. Did they also feel hollow to you?
ReplyCopy URLMarch 25, 2023 at 12:22 am #1205363194If we are talking about lip-syncing in films, we must admit that they are often necessary as it is very difficult to find actors who can sell the dramatics, the visual and the voice. The dubbing of original recordings can be a powerful tool to achieve authenticity if used the right way.

I need to mention here Non, je ne regrette rien, Marion Cotillard would never do justice to Édith Piaf singing this song but her interpretation sells all the emotion that the song wants to convey in the context of the film. But I agree with Vicki Leekx that lip-syncing can often leave a performance feeling hollow, so great care, taste and commitment from the actor are required when using it.March 25, 2023 at 12:29 am #1205363196I think it will be interesting to see which actress ultimately gets the biggest push from Netflix. It could be Bening, Mulligan or King. Shirley’s advance word of mouth has not been strong but Regina King is Regina King. Mulligan could go supporting but at least one person who saw an early screening of Maestro says she’s clearly a co-lead. Bening is overdue and I understand the prediction, but I’m not sure that being in a sports film will be an advantage. Between Nyad, Shirley, and Maestro, I think Maestro has the best chance for a Best Picture nod so for the time being, I think Mulligan will wind up being Netflix’s biggest push in Best Actress. However, as of now, I’m not predicting that any lead actress in a Netflix movie will get an Oscar nomination.
