Darling, it’ll be interesting if Granny Burstyn could get nominated for 2023’s The Exorcist (if it turns out to be good). I’m manifesting it right now.

    Greta Lee, Past Lives
    Ellen Burstyn, The Exorcist
    Kate Winslet, Lee
    Fantasia, The Color Purple
    Carey Mulligan, Maestro

Of course we have another round of “Robbie is winning…” It is like a rite of passage for this thread. The usual suspects are there: Winslet, Moore, Portman, Ronan, Stone… But, we’ll see how they all fare. I am excited about Greta Lee. I watched the trailer and that movie looks so profoundly beautiful… We’ll see. Hoping for the best.

No one said Robbie is winning though. We’re just imagining what would go on here if she ends up winning

I think it will be interesting to see which actress ultimately gets the biggest push from Netflix. It could be Bening, Mulligan or King. Shirley’s advance word of mouth has not been strong but Regina King is Regina King. Mulligan could go supporting but at least one person who saw an early screening of Maestro says she’s clearly a co-lead. Bening is overdue and I understand the prediction, but I’m not sure that being in a sports film will be an advantage. Between Nyad, Shirley, and Maestro, I think Maestro has the best chance for a Best Picture nod so for the time being, I think Mulligan will wind up being Netflix’s biggest push in Best Actress. However, as of now, I’m not predicting that any lead actress in a Netflix movie will get an Oscar nomination.

There’s also Emily Blunt for Pain Hustlers. It could be a pleasant surprise

Just out of curiosity, did you feel this way about Jamie Foxx in Ray? He’s an excellent singer but his vocals as Ray Charles were all dubbed in the movie. Did they also feel hollow to you?

For me this is apples and oranges. Biopics about legendary artists I understand why they are dubbed (Ray, Bohemian Rhapsody etc). Musicals are usually fictional characters and part of the performance is the ability to sing the role. Being dubbed takes away from that beauty, part of the appeal of musicals to me is hearing different actor’s ability portraying the same characters and songs over time. If someone is dubbed in a musical it feels fake.

    FYC 2023:

Zar Amir Ebrahimi - Shayda (Best Actress)
Helen Mirren - Golda (Best Actress)
Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt - Oppenheimer (Best Actor/Actress)

I’m a huge fan of Greta Lee’s, but I don’t see Past Lives going very far. I think people are getting carried away by EEAAO’s awards success.

I agree. Yeoh broke in because of EEAAO’s critical/commercial/industry success and also because she is Michelle Yeoh! Greta Lee is still a very new name. But I am hopredicting till the time I can’t.

Carey Mulligan going supporting doesn’t sit right with me. After all Bradley Cooper was so kind he let her get top billing over himself. He’s one of the most selfless actors in Hollywood. Others have too big of an ego to let woman get top billing. He’s simply the best.

I’m guessing she’s easily going lead à la Felicity Jones. There’ll be the narrative of Cooper singling her out for his co-star and it sounds like a similar relationship driven movie. I would say it’s the same case as Alicia Vikander too for Danish Girl (clearly co-lead) but I think her case was unique in that she had a strong supporting role the same year with category placements all over the place…my hunch based on premise is Mulligan will be co-lead with Cooper. (For the record I think Vikander deserved a nomination in Best Actress for TDG over Jennifer Lawrence and should have won in supporting for Ex Machina instead)

Babes, Mulligan is obviously going supporting in order to secure that Oscar win. She knows very well she’s too irrelevant to film industry to ever win Best Actress. I mean, look at SAG going for a fat suit Coca Cola commercial over her 💀.

I mean she still got nominated a few times this year for an irrelevant movie…and for someone irrelevant her only Oscar nominations have been for Best Actress…I think she certainly should have been nominated in supporting for Shame and lead again for Wildlife…but I can’t say for certain she’s irrelevant to the industry despite the times they’ve snubbed her

Even when Babylon was crashing and burning people still predicted Margot Robbie would get a best actress nomination. Margot Robbie is a great actress and I like her but I’m not going to blindly predict her every year. I won’t do that with any actress. If Barbie gets great reviews and is a hit I’ll consider her but until then, no.

Hun, even more irrelevant actresses have landed nods. Her only notable nod for She Said was BAFTA and that’s mainly due to home country advantage considering that movie was an embarrassing flop. An Education was her breakthrough and, let’s be real, she’d barely make it in a more competitive year for Promising Young Woman. 2020 was a truly atrocious year for cinema. Hence McDormand snatching.

She was also nominated for a Golden Globe last year and Carey Mulligan is anything but irrelevant. She has one of the most interesting careers within the Hollywood bubble and unlike many, she lets her work speak for itself.

    2: Fantasia (The Color Purple)
    3: Natalie Portman (May/December)
4: Jessica Lange (Long Days Journey Into Night)
    5: Greta Lee (Past Lives)
