I wanted to return to talk about Greta Lee and “Past Lives”. I don’t think it is too big of a reach to claim she can be a serious contender this year. Academy has warmly welcomed Asian (especially Korean) movies lately. I don’t think EEAAO was just one-time thing, not when you have in mind “Parasite” and “Minari”. With A24 being it-studio at the moment, Sundance reviews with rather high scores on both MC and RT, I think she can become a contender. Winning is a separate story, but nomination is more than possible.

if she gets hype at the trifecta she can easily gets nominated plus the movie is in english and korean and seems more accessible than aftersun

ReplyCopy URLMarch 26, 2023 at 4:17 pm #1205364703random stat i realized: this century there’s only been 1 actress who twice got in as a lone nominee – penelope cruz. and she was close with parallel mothers too.
Feels a bit random; wonder if she’ll cruise to a second win if she’s in a movie ampas actually embraces.

Parallel Mothers was nominated for Score tho. She got in and won as a lone nominee for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, so maybe that is the second time you’re talking about. But it’s true that she was never carried to a nomination by a film that was strong with the Academy, which just goes to show the respect her peers have for her as an individual/actress.
We talk a lot about goodwill, and I think Penélope Cruz is one of the actresses who has that the most going for her. She stays in her lane, delivering her work with originality, always being gracious to the adversities that the industry throws her way, and I think it’s a consensus that the Vicky Cristina Barcelona’s win is not enough recognition for her talent, so when the moment comes, when the right role comes along, I think Academy members will want to recognize her as a lead actress.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 26, 2023 at 4:31 pm #1205364723The wokeness immediately goes to Barrino who has not an acting bone in her body. Didn’t we learn the lesson from Zeta-Jones and Hudson Tony performances that mistakenly won Oscars. Barrino is a no-name, she is not winning.

Got it. I thought you were referring to the Best Actress category only.

It was an unprecedented lineup in terms of quality so I would be ok with any result. Penélope Cruz is one of my favorite actresses of all time so I would obviously prefer her to win but there’s no way you can take the credit away from Mirren.
