    The French Dispatch!

Not only does The French Dispatch have the best production design of 2021, but it has some of the best production design of all-time! Oscar voters should be ashamed of themselves.

This is Adam Stockhausen’s third production design win, tying him with Dante Ferretti for the most in my awards. He previously won for The Grand Budapest Hotel and Isle of Dogs. He also received nominations for 12 Years a Slave and this year’s West Side Story.

    Congrats, Adam!

    Nightmare Alley!

    Runner-up: The Humans

This is Guillermo Del Toro’s first screenplay win. He previously won best FL film for Pan’s Labyrinth.

He joins fellow amigo Alfonso Cuaron, who won best original screenplay for Y Tu Mama Tambien (2002) and best adapted screenplay for Children of Men (2006).

Inarritu has not won a writing category in my awards, but he is a winner for directing best FL film Amores Perros (2001). To another decade of amigo dominance!

Overall, adapted screenplay was a tough category. It was a historically weak year, and although The Humans had a great script, its magic was lost when transferred to the screen.

    A Hero!

    Runner-up: Licorice Pizza

Very strong category! With this victory, Asghar Farhadi makes history as the individual with the most wins! He is officially the king of the CanadianFan awards with six wins.

Additionally, he ties the record for three wins in the best original screenplay category (A Separation, The Past, A Hero). Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill: Volume 2, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained) is the other.

Two-time winners include Kenneth Lonergan (You Can Count On Me, Manchester by the Sea), Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Marriage Story), and the McDonagh brothers (John Michael for Calvary and Martin for Three Billboards).

Farhadi’s other three wins come from the FL category, which he has won a record three times (About Elly, A Separation, The Past; he was a runner-up for The Salesman and A Hero).

He retains his title as the best screenwriter in the world.

This was the closest acting race of the year and I had a lot of trouble deciding between the two. At the end of the day, some of Chastain’s scenes stayed with me a little longer. I believe it’s her best performance ever.

    The French Dispatch!!!

Runner-up: Licorice Pizza, West Side Story, The Worst Person in the World

The French Dispatch is the most inspiring film I saw in 2021. The craftsmanship is unrivaled and the quartet of stories are quite moving. It’s also the most rewatchable film of the year — so jam-packed with details in every frame that it would be impossible to understand its mechanics after a first watch.

This is the first time a Wes Anderson film has won my top award, but I truly believe this is the most underrated film of the year, and it may be his very best as well!
