I wonder how will this affect the nominees ?
The fact that they wanted about 200 voters from the FIPRESCI to diversify their thinking and didn’t even get 100 means that the Globes should be traditional in their picks this year. One would imagine that it would be an easy task to get that number, but they probably must have sought voters in line with their way of doing things. I warned a user a while back not to expect much change through this voter addition, because there are chances nothing will change.
About the HFPA and the Golden Globes having split and now the ceremony being for profit, this had already been announced some time ago. It was reported that last year they were using the organization’s reserves to continue making charitable donations. So we know the ceremony needs to have a good audience/make money this year. I don’t know if this will spill over into how members vote but maybe they opt for somewhat populist nominations, or maybe vote for people who are in attendance. We won’t know what the meaning of this will be until it happens.December 5, 2022 at 1:31 pm #1205179203Out of curiosity I’ve looked over some of those FIPRESCI members profiles(those I could find on twitter anyway) and their taste in movies is as highbrow as you would expect. It will be interesting to see how it will impact HFPA’s picks this season. I don’t expect something big but I wouldn’t say 100 new members will bring no change whatsoever either.

Did you look over the older voters twitter too? What do they like this year?

I didn’t say no change, I said not much change. I think the vast majority of FIPRESCI has what would be considered a “highbrow” taste, as they are international critics. But I also think the organization very carefully selected the guest voters.
You can believe Frank Rousseau or not but it’s pretty interesting what he has to say:
“This ‘opportunity’ seemed like nothing but a well-planned ambush and yet another excuse for the board to humiliate and intimidate me further. I admit was terrified of the powerful lawyers hired by the HFPA, that have been instructed to ‘crush’ anyone not agreeing with the leadership.”The reasons may be legitimate for ousting Rousseau, but it’s quite interesting that they kicked out the known advocate for reform as they try to prove they’ve changed. I think these guest voters could indeed have some impact on the results, but I also think that any impact they will have has already been calculated by the Globes. But we’ll have to wait and see.

Just some so take it with a grain of salt. I would say Glass Onion (there’s a lot of enthusiasm for it), Babylon, Banshees, Fabelmans (praise for Dano), RRR.

I believe banshees is probably gonna win screenplays there
December 5, 2022 at 3:23 pm #1205179289I was surprised to see so much love for Glass Onion. I could see Monáe winning in whatever category she gets nominated ( Comedy Actress or Supporting).
December 6, 2022 at 4:08 pm #1205180891For those playing along at home, AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER and I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY have not been made available to at least this one Golden Globes voter with around 24hrs left before nominations are due. Did get the original Weeknd song from Avatar, though.

December 6, 2022 at 4:14 pm #1205180906Well, I don’t think IWDWS can coast on the McCarten pedigree if it’s not actually following the blueprint for the other McCarten films.
December 6, 2022 at 4:43 pm #1205180961Does anyone think the Golden Globes might end up being the only awards show that gives major recognition to White Noise? (comedy/musical category, screenplay, actor for Driver and maybe SA for Greta Gerwig). Golden Globe nominations for original score and original song won’t be surprising, but I’m not sure about anything beyond that. I think the only Oscar nominations it could get are for adapted screenplay, original score + song and maybe production design).
December 6, 2022 at 5:00 pm #1205181003Emma Thompson for Matlida instead of Leo Grande???

It’s possible, but the Musical/Comedy categories are pretty crowded this year. EEAAO, Banshees, Babylon, Glass Onion, Nope, The Menu and some other weaker ones.
White Noise seems a bit too artsy to be a Globes pick based on the Hollywood factor alone but not acclaimed enough to be a pick based on merit, especially since this year we have international critics as guest voters. And we also have to take into account that the film has direct competition with Glass Onion in all the categories you mentioned, Baumbach/Johnson, Driver/Craig, Gerwig/Monáe. I think Driver is the biggest possibility of those you mentioned, but since it’s the Globes we can’t be sure of anything.December 7, 2022 at 11:36 am #1205181897Final Acting Predictions
