The Academy has just released the list of 819 people invited to join this year. In terms of diversity, which has obviously been a big discussion topic the last few weeks, 45% of this year’s invitees are women and 36% are people of color. Nationality wise, people from 68 countries overall have been invited. The full list is here. https://www.oscars.org/news/academy-invites-819-membership
Who are you most excited to see join this year?

LOOL! Why was he invited??? He wasn’t even nominated this year and his film, despite all the unjustified hype from the precursors, failed to win all the major categories!!
Go figure.

Then why is Akwafina invited? Her film didn’t get a single nomination. Why was Brian Tyree Henry invited then? He was in Joker for 3 minutes. Why is Natasha Lyonne invited? She’s never even been in a film close to getting any nominations. Zendaya? Kaitlin Dever? Constance Wu? Eva freaking Longoria?
I’ll never forget reading that Scully from Broklyn 99 was invited a couple of years ago. He was one of the two security guards on The Truman Show. That’s the closest he’s come to an Oscar movie (which wasn’t even a BP nominee).

Not sure what Eva Longoria has done to merit this inclusion, but that’s the case for a good number of the acting names. Tyne Daly is a television legend, but her film presence isn’t as storied. Nice on the continued diversity strides. Some unexpected names here and there. Tim McGraw? Jesus. Congrats to John David Washington, Awkwafina, Cho Yeo Jeong (yay!), Yul Vasquez, Florence Pugh, Yalitza, Beanie Feldstein, Natasha Lyonne, Kelvin Harrison, Jr., Lakeith Stanfield, Niecy Nash, etc.! No Song Kang Ho? Hope he’s already a member too. Lots of tech inclusions this year and more than most years.

Jennifer Lopez was invited to join in 2013, and Song Kang Ho was invited to join in 2015.

The winners have only arguably been getting better, with winners like Moonlight, Parasite, and Nomadland (and yes, Frances was the best in her category last year — her second win was the confusing one). And LaKeith was also a great nomination, as logical of a category placement as Daniel which the studios forced on everyone lol.
