No. That’s totally unfair. It’s like they’re calling 2 or 3 of the nominees filler. It hurts the credibility of the voting process because they’re obviously favouring the performing artists and their songs. We all know Shallow is winning with an almost impossible upset by ATS, they don’t need to underline it like that.

It doesn’t have to do with fairness. It’s not like performing a song at the Oscars boosts your chance of winning, since the votes are already counted. It has to do with the ratings. If you want to perform at the Oscars, your song needs among the most commercially successful nominees.

If they are so desperate to make the ceremony shorter, they should just get rid of all the performances, presenters and all the fluff and just hand out ALL the awards. That’s why I watch award shows, to see who wins and their speeches. Everything else is filler. The Oscars are trying to become the Grammys, treating the award show part as an afterthought. The Grammys are extremely boring with the 20+ performances and less than 10 awards and they’re trying to follow the same path but without the performances. What are they going to do, then?

This would almost be a perfect comparison except that the Oscars are also trying to cut back on the performances for…? No host, no full-length musical performances, no full presentation of awards during the live broadcast, what’s going on with all that extra time??

More commercials!!! Remember, those advertisements are the primary reason of interest in the Oscars, right?

I swear if they’re doing all these cuts but if but find time to put tons of comedy skits and a Bohemian Rhapsody +4minutes performance…… I’ll probably give up on the ceremony aswell

Also, is Frances McDormand seen around? Or was she just placed in the OP due to tradition?

A Queen performance and only 90s for nominated songs would be disrespectful. Bohemian Tragedy is ruining this season.

All five songs should be performed in their entirety on the Oscars telecast or nothing at will. 90 seconds for each song is pure garbage in every possible way. Next.

I love Carly Simon and was really disappointed the year she won that they didn’t do any of the 3 nominated songs ): It was made up for by Carly winning of course! Not sure if she would have wanted to perform since she suffers from stage fright but it sure would have been a great moment for me as a huge fan of hers!

I wold rather have 90 seconds than no songs at all. If they were to do a creative arts ceremony then they would have enough time for full songs.

I have changed my mind – 13 categories ought to be on the main show and 11 in the creative arts.

I know you’re adopting the Emmys terminology, but can we not call categories you don’t care about “creative arts” categories. As of right now the Oscars make no such distinction, despite the fact they’re handing certain awards during commercials.

This article doesn’t explicitly mention of “Shallow” and “All the Stars” will also be only 90 seconds, but mentions that the other three songs will only be a minute and a half long.

Additionally, this article confirms that last year’s acting winners are not confirmed to present this year…at least not yet. It also seems to suggest the telecast producers were the ones that pushed for technical categories to be pushed to commercials. Still, there is no mention of what this means will actually take up the time of the telecast, but I don’t feel any better about this show than I did before.

That is an embarrassment to not have last year’s winners back to honor this tradition. People are not tuning in because Oprah is presenting Best Actor. Its like, you won an Oscar but you are not good enough to come back the next year. These producers need to go.

Not having last year’s winners to present is ridiculous. It’s not like the audience knows that Oprah is presenting an award and decide to watch it just because of that. How stupid is that.

Why do all Oscar news this year feel bittersweet? They solve a bad thing and another mess starts instead.
What are these producers thinking? Glenn Weiss took 5 minutes on Emmy stage to propose his wife during the most random category presented live when himself is an unknown. And now he wants to cut everything in the ceremony and have only super hot A-list celebrities to appear on the telecast and talk for only 40 seconds? Hope the Emmys cut him off this year if he wins again

These telecast producers decisions will likely lead to some of lowest rating ever… Careers should suffer because of this. I hope as many famous celebrities simply don’t attend the Oscars as possible, just to make a statement of some kind objecting to how incompetently this whole Oscar ceremony (Kevin Hart, categories moved to commercials, last year’s acting winners maybe not presenting, 90-second songs, etc.) has been handled. This whole 91st Oscars feels like a joke and not the funny kind.

I’m starting to wonder if Shallow and All the Stars will get to perform in full, while the other 3 songs will be placed into a medley performed at some point in the telecast.

Yea, with no host I don’t understand why it is now more difficult to fit everything in.
