I still think there will be 1 to 2 surprises in the acting categories. I also think that the movies for these 1 – 2 surprises will pop up in Best Picture. “I can’t put my finger on it, but if I did – I would have to wash it.”

Not random at all with the likes of Elizabeth Banks, Guillermo Del Toro, Mark Ruffalo, Josh Gad, and Barry Jenkins tweeting their support of it. Hollywood LOVES this movie more openly than any animated film I have seen since Toy Story 3, if not more than that Pixar film. There does seem to be more widespread passion for it than Inside Out, which made the cut for Screenplay but not Picture. Considering the current state of the Best Picture Oscar race, it would be naive and myopic to not have Spider-Verse predicted in the Top 10, even if at the very bottom, just to be safe.

Hmm… I can see Adapted Screenplay happening but it missed that on pre cursors….

Finding Nemo (BAFTA only) + Incredibles + Wall-E + Ratatouille missed almost every precursor in screenplay including WGA and all got in their screenplay categories, except at the Annies. It’s not impossible especially if it hits BAFTA + WGA

With the recent wins of Moonlight and The Shape of Water, I am more hopeful about The Favourite winning than I might have been a few years ago.

It needs to win a major guild award but which one? It missed SAG, which could’ve been its easiest win, it’s ineligible at WGA and I don’t see it winning DGA. So, that leaves the PGA. Does anyone think it can win there?

I still believe that the preferential ballot will help Roma. If ASIB over performs in nominations it could be a problem; I actually think there was a resentment towards La La Land’s 14 nominations that helped Moonlight win by preferential ballot. I don’t think will happen to ASIB, which I am predicting will get 10 nominations (I am predicting Roma will get 9 nominations). I do think the winner will be either Roma or A Star is Born. If ASIB misses in Adapted Screenplay, which is a remote possibility, there will be a slight opening. I enjoyed ASIB for the most part, with reservations, thought it was a good solid movie, but not a great one. It wouldn’t be an offensive win but it wouldn’t be a great one either. I am rooting for Roma, which will at least win 4 Oscars, which isn’t shabby!

I was curious as to see what the current Gold Derby odds are saying in terms of nominations counts; currently this would be the totals for each film receiving more than 3 nominations if nobody outside of the top five on here was to get nominted (some of these feel way off to me):

    12: A Star is Born (5 wins)
    10: The Favourite (3 wins)
    9: Black Panther (1 win)
    9: Mary Poppins Returns
    7: Roma (4 wins)
    6: Vice (1 win)
5: If Beale Street Could Talk (1 win)
    4: BlacKKKlansman (1 win)
    4: Green Book (1 win)
3: Can You Ever Forgive Me?

No others received more than 3. (Vice is #1 in Makeup & Hairstyling).

I think some of these will not be the final winners. Time will tell!

Nope. It’s between A Star is Born and Black Panther there. It will probably win BAFTA which wont mean anything since it seems like everyone prediction is for BAFTA to do their own thing.

People who actually have Mary Poppins Returns nominated in 9 categories… I can’t help but find that really ridiculously funny.

Which categories should it not be in? (other than S. Actress…I know that’s not a popular opinion).

If you are referring to my post that was a list of all the top five according to Gold Derby as of right now, and Mary Poppins is in the top five (in the top 10 for BP) in eight categories, as it has two Original Song top five placements. Those weren’t my predictions. They were the combined Gold Derby odds predictions.

I think The Favourite has a really good chance of taking GG, BAFTA and maybe CC. That would make it a really strong contender without a guild win.
