Let’s all be real here Parasite is gonna win the award. It’s already second runner up at tiff which guarantee a win. Roma was second runner up last year too and won. It seem like Roma parasite may even get nominations outside foreign film hell all the goldderby experts are predicting it. Pain and glory and portrait of a lady on fire stand no chance. Let’s just stop pretending pain anglory and portrait of a lady on fire are gonna be upsets because they are not. Just say the truth and give parasite the award already and call it a day. Y’all are dramatic over this. Also don’t give me the bullshit excuse “but Korea never gets nominated burning was snubbed”. Y’all know Parasite is gonna be Korea first nomiantion AND win. Neon is already trying to campaign for best picture nomiantions anyway so they don’t give a shit about their other film portrait of a lady on fire. Neon ain’t gonna compete against themselves they don’t have enough money to campaign for two films so they gonna choose the more Oscar friendly one which is parasite over portait of a lady on fire

I agree Parasite looks like the one to beat at this point, but we’ll never know for sure until the Academy releases the list of the semifinalists.

I think the academy is going to have really bad backlash if they don’t nominate parasite the buzz is too strong with this movie and so many academy members are supporting the movie already anyway

Does anyone know if Nadav Lapid’s Synonyms, which won the Golden Bear at Berlinale this year, is eligible to be Israel’s official submission? It’s a co-production between France and Israel and is in both French and Hebrew. Since it’s not on France’s shortlist, I’m wondering if Israel could submit the film, or if it’ll have to sit the Oscars out.

Really curious if you have actually seen Pain & Glory and Portrait of a Lady on Fire, which shouldn’t even really be in the conversation at this point because France has yet to announce their submission.

Despite that Parasite (in my personal opinion) is superior to Pain & Glory the fact remains that Pain & Glory is more Academy friendly than Parasite. Go to page 8 on this thread and read my post because I’m not going to bother repeating any Pain & Glory is a real threat to Parasite winning (what I personally believe it should).

Certainly, at this stage it is Parasite’s to loose so to speak but a win for Parasite it still far from certain at this stage in the middle of September. Parasite has strong competition from Pain & Glory and potentially some other films as well. We really need to see how things play out during the rest of the year.

No, I’m afraid Synonyms is not eligible. The reason for this is that Israel have what is known at the Ophir Award and the winner of this is want that submit for this category. Synonyms is not in the running for the Ophir so will therefore not be submitted. In some ways a shame because its a good film but then I haven’t seen any of the films submitted for the Ophir so I can’t draw any comparisons. Having said that I couldn’t see the Academy selecting Synonyms – a bit too out there for them I would think.

Can we zoom out for a second and appreciate how great a year this is for Best International Film? We’ve got a Best Picture contender (Parasite), a Best Actor contender (Pain and Glory), a Best Animated Feature contender (Weathering With You), and other great films like Monos, The Whistlers, Corpus Christi, Honeyland! And that is without Portrait of a Lady on Fire in the list.

International cinema has been on a roll this year and American cinema is struggling to catch up.

It’ll be interesting to see if Honeyland also makes it into the semifinalists list for Best Documentary Feature.

What American movie this year is as bold as Parasite? What American movie this year is as beautiful as Weathering With You? What American movie is so emotionally nuanced as Portrait of a Lady on Fire?

The Philippines has selected Verdict for its entry in the Best International Feature category. It won a prize in Venice just recently.

The Philippines has been added to the list, and so has Greece, whose submission is When Tomatoes Met Wagner. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/greek-oscar-submission-is-documentary-tomatoes-met-wagner-1240970

As a Filipino, I don’t think Verdict is as good as Dagsin, the one previously alleged to be the Philippines’ submission. It has a Ma’Rosa (the country’s Oscar submission a few years ago that won Best Actress in Cannes) vibes but I guess it’s not going well considering the treatment for Ma’Rosa.
