Or with I Carry You With Me by Heidi Ewing. I think, our best shot.

I know the producers are doing the campaign, but I wonder if they missed to ask to AMPAS related to eligibility, considering the director (Heidi Ewing) is full US citizen. For just that, other films were disqualified.

As a Portuguese moviegoer, I hope the Portuguese Academy submits “Vitalina Varela”.
Such an exquisite piece of cinema I recommended you to watch even if it is not selected

    They actually might.

Last Costa film submitted was in ’91.
(Not to mention they’ve never landed a film on the longlist…)

I hope Brazil submits “Pacarrete” instead of “Memory House”.

I love it, I love it, I love it, but I also have my problems with it.

Nicole Kidman is amazing in Moulin Rouge!

The film won the Golden Globe and the PGA for Best Motion Picture

Does anyone know anything about the German contenders this year? I have seen quite a few of our 2020 releases after the first lockdown but they were mostly absolutely horrible.

I’ve only seen Undine and Berlin Alexanderplatz and obviously Undine is the better one but it’s probably not Oscar’s thing. When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit looks so bad, and then there’s Tomorrow the Entire World, which looks kinda promising so i will look forward to it when it comes out in Nov here.

Thank you! Pink Rabbit was extremely mediocre and cheesy but it’s from the same director as Nowhere in Africa and it’s about WWII which seems to be the only stuff Germany can get Oscar attention with (plus it’s WWII told through the eyes of a child which they ate up this year). I think Berlin Alexanderplatz could be likely because it’s quite a timely flick from what I’ve heard. I’ve Never Been to New York would be SUCH a meme, I saw that movie when it came out last November and it had some of the cheapest production design I had ever seen in a musical.

I’d love Portugal submitting Vitalina Varela but apparently this was released late last year in the country so anyways.
Would be one of the best winners in the category in years.

Actually I might be submitted. It’s possible.
The submitted motion pictures must be first released theatrically in their respective countries between 1 October 2019 and 31 December 2020.
And Vitalina was on portuguese theatres on November 2019.
    Theres a chance.

FYC TV: Stateless | We Are Who We Are | Cate Blanchett in Stateless | Paapa Essiedu in I May Destroy You

FYC Movie: Boys In The Band | Toni Collette in I’m Thinking Of Ending Things | Jim Parsons in The Boys In The Band | Shailene Woodley in Endings, Beginnings | Zoey Deutch in Buffaloed | Sebastian Stan in Endings, Beginnings

Well, then lets hope we don’t fuck up our submission again. The amount of times our Academy fucked the portuguese submissions is appauling.

In a first round where 58 films participated in the selection, the Spanish Academy selected 3 films:

    -The platform (El hoyo)
-Fire will come (O que arde)*
-The endless trench (La trinchera infinita)

The result will be revealed in early November.

*This film is in Galician language one of the 3 co-official languages of Spain. And it was awarded at Cannes ’19.

It’s really surprising that Portugal never had a Foreign Language nominee. Let’s see that changes this year.

It is. And it’s not because our industry sucks. We have some incredible masterpieces. “Tabu”, “Mysteries of Lisbon” and “Diamantino” are perfect examples. Unfortunately, our Academy sucks when it comes to submissions and never submits the best we have. Lets hope that changes this year indeed. Hopefully we’ll submit “Vitalina Varela” but I’m not getting my hopes up too high.

The thing is, I believe if our Academy selects “Vitalina Varela” we might have a chance not only at the Oscar, but I would say the critics prizes also. The “Tabu” non-submission still bothers me every time I think about it…!
