I knew people way way overestimate “The Worst Person of the World” as favourite to win this category (or even becoming a broad contender in main categories). Romantic comedies/dramedies don’t tell to be nominated anymore in this category (Unless these came with a realistical acting contender, and we know Reinsve has lost the steam over Cruz). And less if these stories are too feminine. When they nominate a female driven story, it’s often a dramatic one based on a social and political issue or related to an specific trope (WWII for example).

In the prior system with 9 nominees I would predict this film as one of the main snubbed contenders. But yeah, after not being in the Top 3 per TIFF, this film lost big numbers over a more competitive race.

100% agree. This is Toni Erdmann/The Square all over again.

It is the frontrunner as of now, but I can see something more social relevant (Flee or Compartment No6) winning. Great Freedom and Let it Be Morning are being underestimated as well.

I watched “Titane” last night. I liked it, but I am not hailing it as a masterpiece that is changing the future of the art, like many other people seem to think. Sometimes I felt that the “what-the-fuckery” was coming at the expenses of the themes Ducournau was trying to explore. In other words, similarly to her first feature “Raw”, I had the impression that it was trying to say too many things at the same time: gender-bending, trauma, queerness, sex, family, acceptance of others, sexuality, ideas of masculinity, sexism, mental health, etc. How many things can you cram into a movie before it explodes from your belly, lol? That said, I respect the craft involved in creating such a visceral body horror, the commitment of the two leads and the disturbing Cronenbergian images that are given some heart.

Let’s be real about it’s Oscar prospects now. When was the last time a provocative, gross body horror movie was nominated? Probably never. My prediction is that it will make the shortlist, but not the final five.

    Dogtooth

And I ask you: When was the last time a provocative, gross body horror movie was submitted by an important country in cinema such as France ?

You’re right, I forgot about “Dogtooth” and I love Yorgos Lanthimos.

I am just amazed that people think this rotten movie has “themes” worth exploring. It’s garbage! The craft involved? I really believe that film critics have lost their minds. There is not one single thing that is good about this movie. It just proves that female directors can be just as misogynistic and sick as male directors. In what way were “the disturbinb Ceonenbergian images…given some heart”? Excuse me, did we see the same movie? The one with the sullen sulky awful woman who has sex and gets impregnated by a (spoiler)? Queerness and acceptance of others? Huh? This film is the worst movie of the year and deserves a ton of Razzies. Sorry, but nobody will ever convince me this is even a slightly good film. Grade: F!!!!!!!

You just summarized my exact thoughts regarding Titane. It has some strong ideas but it just felt short for me. It just lacked depth and development. Some of the scenes were borderline stupid too. I can totally understand why someone would love it, but yeah, it didn’t click for me like I wanted. I loved Raw, so I’m quite disappointed overall. The first 30 minutes were incredible though.

Aren’t all those ideas inherently connected, though? I’d say that she went as deep as it was possible with a theme as complex as queerness. And if you ask me, she even made it look simple and natural, in a way. My only complaint is that the film wasn’t as grotesque as I expected with all the hype it had, lol. I wouldn’t want to watch Tetsuo or Red Angel with FreemanGriffin.
