So assuming the expected four get their nominations, which has the edge for the win?

I would think The Worst Person in the World, right? Has mild buzz and broad appeal, and seems to be a crowd-pleaser for many spectators who don’t often engage in non-English-language cinema. That is, unless the voting body is really ready to hand Farhadi a third statue for a body of work that seems to have diminishing critical returns. They won’t give it to an animated documentary and I will go to my grave betting against Sorrentino out of spite haha.

I have a few friends whose tastes I usually respect who loved The Hand of God. I plan to give Sorrentino another chance and rewatch The Great Beauty in the meantime, which i really disliked many years ago. I suspect it’ll be an equally painful experience lol.

Well, that’s insane, just like the movie is insane. But I hope the panel has the good sense to leave it off their list of finalists. It is truly a disgusting sick-souled movie but I suppose that reflects these sick-souled times we are living in. I didn’t know enough about the other two films, haven’t seen them, so I don’t know what France ought to have chosen instead.

Really disappointed that Spain didn’t choose Parallel Mothers (: I really wish they would abandon their system, I don’t know how to go about it, but if there are more than one worthwhile film from a country that ought to be nominated then so be it.

I’d be happy to be proven wrong since I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad movie, but I don’t see Titane making the shortlist. The hype feels very online.

It’s one of the few movies that the members will widely watch. It’s definitely making the shotlist. If it’s getting nominated or not, I don’t know.

Remember that the whole Academy gets to vote, so they will just go with popular picks.

    This isn’t true.

    From the 94th AMPAS Rules:

The International Feature Film Preliminary Committee will view the eligible submissions in the
category and vote by secret ballot to produce a shortlist of fifteen films.

And the whole Academy is welcome to be part of the comittee.

In the international feature category, the Board of Governors adopted and approved the amendments made for the 93rd Oscars, including the expansion of the shortlist from 10 to 15 films. All Academy branches are invited to opt-in and participated in the preliminary and nomination voting rounds but must meet a minimum viewing requirement to be eligible to vote in the category.

Right, but they still have to watch the eligible films. And I don’t think they’ll go out of their way to lie about it just to get a film with name recognition on the shortlist even though critics/audiences are somewhat divided on it.
