Spain will choose Parallel Mothers, Italy will choose The Hand of God and Iran will choose A Hero.

Any other films that are obviously going to be chosen by their respective countries?

Perhaps not an “obvious” choice but maybe Germany submits I’m Your Man?

    FYC:

"The Good Fight" and "The Other Two" in all categories.

Would Compartment No. 6 be a Finnish or Russian submission?

In my town this ran in theaters for months (longer than any other non Marvel film, I’d say). Had never thought about it but that makes all the sense.

    For Hong Kong:

I think they won’t send LEAP(Picked by China for 2021),nor would they send Inside the Red Brick Wall (Documentary that got awarded the Best film award of Hong Kong this year;Too Sensitive),Given the tendency of HKG sending Box office Hit,they will go with either Raging Fire,Shock Wave 2 (From the Director of The White Storm 2),or Zero to Hero, those 3 are being at least 20 Million HKD in Box Office

Oh they might go with Drifting as well,it’s about Homeless in Hong Kong,Is in Rotterdam Fest, and Social issues is also Norm of the Oscar

I guess Lingui, The Sacred Bonds for Tchad, Murina for Croatia and Feathers for Egypt.

While it’s an international production, the production company, director and much of the crew are Finnish, and it’s based on a Finnish novel. This will be Finland’s submission (unless they decide to submit something else, though that would be a shock).

Parallel mothers is one step closer to become Spain’s submission. It has been one of the three films pre-selected by the Spanish Academy. The other two are The good boss starring Javier Bardem and Mediterranean Sea.

At the time being I’m inclined to put more faith in L’evenement and The Worst Person in the World than in Hand of God. The movie is good but it’s fragile in many points and not in the same state of grace as The Great Beauty. So I don’t know if Sorrentino will have a shot in other categories (in that case, he obviously would became the frontrunner here)

    2022 Award Season, FYC:

Best Picture: Mass, Titane, The Power of the Dog, West Side Story
Best Director: Julia Ducournau, Jane Campion, Steven Spielberg
Best Actress: Jodie Comer, Isabelle Fuhrman
    Best Actor: Benedict Cumberbatch
    Best Original Screenplay: Mass
Best Supporting Actress: Ann Dowd, Martha Plimpton, Ruth Negga, Kirsten Dunst
Best Supporting Actor: Kodi Smit-McPhee, Mike Faist, Jason Isaacs, Reed Birney

L’événement (Happening) is set for a 2022 release in France so if it sticks to this date it won’t be eligible for Best International Feature at Oscars next ceremony..

Maybe now with its Golden Lion win the French distributor will change the date but for the moment, it can’t be selected by the French comity.

Yesterday it was announced Diwan has just signed with CAA with them already looking for a distributor in the States (with the french distributor also taking part in it). It makes me believe they might be really trying to push L´événement this season tbh.

    1. The Worst Person in the World – Norway

    2. Petite Maman -France (I think it will be the film selected considering the director’s trajectory and that it was controversial that it was not selected in 2019)

    3. A Hero  – Iran

    4. Compartment  n6 -Finland

    5.   Seven Prisoners -Brazil

6.a The Hand of God -Italy

    7. Whell of Fortune and Fantasy -Japan

    8. Parallel mothers -Spain

    9. Lingui –  Chad

    10. Rescue distance- Perú

Being swedish, I can make a guess about Sweden’s potential submission.

The two most likely films are The Triangle of Sadness if it is done in time. Directed by Ruben Östlund, who was previously nominated in international picture for his film The Square. The film centers around a group of models being stranded on an island in the middle of the ocean. Starring Woody Harrelson amongst others. Might be a little too weird, but knowing Östlund, he’ll do anything for that Oscar.

The other one is a remake of The Emigrants, which was nominated in 1972 for Best picture, director, screenplay, actress and international film.

If for some reason neither of these two becomes our submission, the next in line I’d guess is something like Pleasure. Directed by Ninja Thyberg, the film centers on a young woman in the L.A. adult film industry. It’s been making its way around some festivals and have been received fairly well. Knowing my home country, this one might very well be the one being submitted.
