Huh. That’s interesting. Wasn’t November 1 the deadline for countries to submit their films? How are these three countries submitting films a few days after the supposed deadline?

I assume they were submitted on time but we’re just now learning about it.

    Ah! That makes sense.

This release date for The Worst Person in the World could really hurt the movie.

My theory is that they probably believe the nomination is locked, so the release date would be really good for the final phase of voting because it would be fresh on the voter’s mind.

    Really weird strategy.

Yeah the Neon folks are opting for the multi-category threat (animated, doc, international et al.) that is Flee (Dec. 3) as their year-ender to try to snag as many noms as it can, while they prepare to bolster Kristen Stewart as their prime performance contender as they aim for their first headliner acting Oscar.

Renate Reinsve, brilliant as she is, has the misfortune of starring in Neon’s The Worst Person in the World as the studio aims to win its first lead acting Oscar with Spencer, whose current reception indicates a potential need for added care in handling the film through awards season (the trimback of Spencer’s plan for approximately 1500 screens on release day also points to this.) After following up its Parasite triumph with a mostly whiffed 2020 (Ammonite! Shirley! Palm Springs!), Neon is eager to get back in the game this season and the retrenchment is on – it apparently pushed Petite Maman to 2022 (perhaps it was used as a hedge in case France opted for it over Titane for int’l film submission) and it seems to be counting on Stewart outpacing Reinsve during the precursor period, with TWPITW ending up with just an international film nom (even though that category is heavy with competitors / aside from stablemates Flee and Titane, there are A Hero and The Hand of God backed by deeper-pocketed players). We’ll see…

Were Spencer not a legitimate best
-actress contender (or were it contending at a rival studio instead of at Neon), it’s quite likely that Dec. 3 release date would belong to Joachim Trier’s film.

I’m gonna assume Parallel Mothers wasn’t eligible given the complete erasure and how the EFA loves Almodovar

The winners would be a good sign of where European support settles, but I think The Father will sweep Film, Director and Actor. If not that, then it will be The Hand of God (they have a hard on for Sorrentino), with Ducournau as a spoiler in Director.

Between The Worst Person in the World missing the BIFA shortlist and now this… I can see the snub coming miles away.

I don’t think The Worst Person in the World will get snubbed, but Trier is likely to not be the surprise foreign director nomination.

    Michelle Williams Oscar campaign manager.

I have Compartment No, .6 Winning the NBR, but they’ve given the win to both A Separation and The Salesman so it’s fair to assume Farhadi will at least make its top 5.

As said before, Compartment N°6 should be above The Worst Person in the World in your predictions, this snub in Best Picture at EFA is telling..

Does anybody know if Happening was eligible for these awards ?

It was. I think Parallel mothers was the only big Venice film that was left out by the board. Here is the September list.
