It was. I think Parallel mothers was the only big Venice film that was left out by the board. Here is the September list. https://www.cineuropa.org/en/newsdetail/410856/

I mean, was “Parallel Mothers” left out or ineligible for some reason? Because otherwise at least Penélope Cruz would have made it for Best Actress. She’s the best thing in the movie.

”Happening” and “Petite Maman” snubs suggest that maybe France did the right thing by selecting “Titane” after all.

Told you The Worst Person in the World is a really weak frontrunner. If it wasn’t for the acclaim, this would be the first candidate for the snubbed films.

The film failing to place at TIFF People Choice Award was the first red flag. Never understood the predictions for the movie in director or original screenplay after that, but after the snubs here I would be shocked if it gets in any ATL categories. Romantic comedies, especially this one that seems to be dark, doesn’t seem like it would do well with AMPAS.

    Actress: Kristen Stewart, Alana Haim

I mean, Compartment No. 6 and Flee also failed to place at TIFF. The Worst Person In the World failed to get Best Film at the European Film Awards but still got Actress and Screenplay. It slightly underperformed but it wasn’t a tank. It’s still Neon’s biggest push in the category and is the movie with biggest IMDb score, out of the big contenders, alongside Flee.

Was it eligible for the main category?

No if we go for the current awards promotion per Neon. If we go for that logic, Flee is actually Neon’s first priority in this category.

Now if people want to believe it like happened with Mass is another thing.

No, it’s ineligible at TIFF to compete in the main award. Ditto Titane with the Madness Film category.

Per EFAs, it looks they changed the rules considering Waltz with Bashir was nominated in the main categories, but they put restrictions for Documental (And probably Animated films)

How is Flee their biggest priority when they’re not even sending the movie to that Deadline event at LA for Academy members? Neon is only sending Spencer and The Worst Person In the World.

And what do you mean with what happened with Mass?

I didn’t know Documentaries couldn’t compete for the main Audience award. My bad. I did know the movies competitng in the Madness Film Category weren’t eligible for the main one. But thanks for enlightening me.

Deadline event is a big platform but it’s not the sole one. It’s more telling how Neon only put that qualifying run and still doesn’t have a proper marketing or screeners sent for The Worst Person in the World over Flee (Which now has a proper team working).

My reference for Mass is about how people overrate the film chances when the red flags are becoming to appear (Like Ann Dowd is winning the Oscar lol).

That event is not the end all or be all. Flee has a shot in three different categories (Animated, Documentary and International Feature) and they’re also campaigning it for Best Picture and Original Screenplay. It’s kinda logic that they’re going to focus on it + Spencer (or Stewart)

Well, I always knew Mass was being overestimated and that Dowd was being massively overhyped.
I didn’t know Flee had a team behind it, so that’s good for it but it’s still weird they’re not sending it to a big Academy event but anyway.

Speaking of trends, since the days of crossmatch between European Film Awards and Oscars:

2020: Another Round (Winner Best Picture and Director)
    2015: Son of Saul (Ineligible)
2014: Ida (Winner Best Picture and Director)
2013: The Great Beauty (Winner Best Picture and Director)
2012: Amour (Winner Best Picture and Director)
2010: In a Better World (Nominee Best Picture and Director)
    2007: The Counterfeiters (Ineligible)
2006: The Lives of Others (Winner Best Picture and Director)
2004: The Sea Inside (Winner Best Picture and Director)
    2002: Nowhere in Africa (Snubbed)
    2001: No Man’s Land (Snubbed)

You need to return till 2002 to see a precedent for “The Worst Person in the World”, unless you count the ineligible films. Every eligible film from the EFA which won Best Foreign Language Film has been nominated in the main categories there.

    Good luck to that.

Hmmm… I could’ve sworn Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom was last year’s submission for Bhutan too.

I just love movies. And awards.
