Belgium has submitted Close as its entry. https://www.screendaily.com/news/lukas-dhonts-close-selected-as-belgiums-oscar-entry/5174576.article
So excited to see this. It’ll compliment Banshees of Inisherin nicely lol.
I wonder what’ll be the Lunana of the year.
ReplyCopy URLI just love movies. And awards.
September 20, 2022 at 6:20 am #1205091156India selects Chhello Show, instead of RRR.
Gujarati film '#ChhelloShow' aka '#LastFilmShow' beats 'RRR', 'The Kashmir Files' to become India's official entry to Oscars 2023https://t.co/GeewO57Rjl pic.twitter.com/8UYItUbG2o

September 20, 2022 at 6:21 am #1205091158I am an Indian myself, so this news is extremely disappointing. We had a golden hen in our hand in form of RRR but the committee is up their ass when it comes to furthering their own propaganda – that they can’t see rationale beyond it. First Lunchbox and now RRR! Sigh

Ridiculous. RRR would have been a lock for the nomination.

How big is “RRR” in India?
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 20, 2022 at 6:06 pm #1205092159I think the final five nominations will look something like this—
Close (Belgium) *
Corsage (Austria)
EO (Poland)
Decision To Leave (South Korea)
Bardo (Mexico)(With a longlist of)—
Holy Spider (Denmark)
Saint Omer (France)
Klondike (Ukraine)
Alcarras (Spain)
World War III (Iran)EDIT: WAIT! Is the longlist 15 again? Forgot about that. If so, adding these:
Eternal Spring (Canada)
Argentina, 1985 (Argentina)
Utama (Bolivia)
… and, two more… (maybe Pakistan’s Joyland?)I’m not sold on Close winning (I haven’t even seen it), but I think it’s the frontrunner at this point. I think there’s going to be a solid selection this year that’ll result in an even competition.
Surprised Iceland didn’t go with Godland.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 20, 2022 at 6:18 pm #1205092172Corsage giving In the Fade, The Good Boss, I’m Your Man, etc.
Whenever there’s an international film that stars a recognizable actor from American cinema, the branch tends to pass over it.
It makes sense. Why would the film need the extra push from the Academy if it already has a built-in marketing tool?

I see that, definitely. Could be a similar situation.
Keep in mind Another Round, Pain & Glory, and The Square were all nominated in recent years too. Albeit bigger films, they also had some heavy top-billing.

I think the difference is those films were already competing for several ATL categories.
Vicky Krieps isn’t much of a factor in Best Actress this year, but a Costume Design nomination for Corsage isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
