Some will say the Globes don’t matter, but I find it a little weird that All Quiet on the Western Front couldn’t pull off a win there.
All Quiet on the Western Front is such a mystery this season. The HFPA is the easiest to campaign for because of the small size of the voting body, so I agree it’s weird. Maybe the guest voters impacted this category a lot, we don’t know, but the movie does seem to be on shaky ground.

The movie seems buzzless, it’s not doing particularly great with critics, didn’t do well on the BAFTA longlists and with The Quiet Girl rising, I feel like Close might be the snub.

I can see your point but I actually didn’t think it was winning tbh. In fact, I didn’t really think they would go with any movie other than RRR. It just felt like such an HFPA movie. And when it won Song, I thought International was more locked than ever. The fact that it couldn’t win there, just makes me even more confident it’s not going anywhere with the Academy outside Song.

I’ve been keeping it purely because of the IMDB score.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 13, 2023 at 9:38 am #1205241201A somewhat unpopular opinion perhaps, but Close being snubbed would be deserved. Basic in so many ways, queer filmmaking 101. Corsage, Return to Seoul, and The Quiet Girl are much better movies.

I haven’t seen it yet but that doesn’t surprise me considering the terrorism that was Girl. Dhont deserved jail for that one.

I was excited for the movie, my dad saw it at Cannes and he told me great things about it, so I literally went to see it the weekend it came out in theaters here. But what an average film. I understand people connecting with the emotional aspect of it but it lacks in execution, just like Girl. Dhont tries to be a little less problematic, which is fine, but the film ends up without any real personality.

Did he manage to shock you with Close? Without giving away spoilers, what happens to Rémi and the ramifications of it is such a far-fetched exploration of trauma that I couldn’t connect at any point. But if he managed to shock you, perhaps his work was accomplished more successfully than I’m giving him credit for. I also think toxic masculinity was explored so insightfully by The Power of the Dog last year, that seeing this topic brought to a tearjerker with characters so young that they have no real understanding of the implications of this issue seems a little too empty to me.

I never thought RRR was making Picture or Director, but the lack of enthusiasm in the room for it when it won Song kind of surprised me. Song definitely feels like its peak.
I just think the result goes to show that International may still be split. All Quiet seems more appreciated than loved (this sadly seems true for Decision to Leave also), and the love for The Quiet Girl and EO is being underestimated.

The twist shocked me, but I find the film problematic and irresponsible. The first issue is that the director doesn’t go deep enough into Rémi’s character, so the twist isn’t a natural consequence of what we’ve seen, but rather an attempt by Dhont to shock the audience. Dhont is not interested in discussing LGBT issues, he is only interested in shocking the public, precisely in exploring their suffering.

and also that aparently it was snubbed from DGA first feature because if they count the first film release in usa as first film for diwan is the same for berger
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 13, 2023 at 6:52 pm #1205242020It is cruel that almost all of the submissions aren’t available in VOD. From the ones I’ve seen, my personal preference…
1. All Quiet on the Western Front. I never saw the first one but I recently saw The Thin Red Line so that probably influenced my thoughts about this film.
2. Decision to Leave. I don’t buy into this detective falling head over heels with Tang Wei’s character, but the overall mystery is good.
3. The Quiet Girl. I like it, but the story is pretty simple no?
4. Argentina 1985. It’s a mix of No (from Chile), Spotlight and JFK for me. I like it but out of these four, I care least about it. But the historical lesson given was pretty enlightening.
5. Bardo. I stopped with the umbilical cord scene. It just seemed so silly and seemed so long for something a lot of people in here are claiming to be bad. I just don’t want to waste my time… unless you guys think I should watch that whole thing.
ReplyCopy URLI just love movies. And awards.
