The news about this was originally reported in late 2019, and there’s finally been an update. According to the BBC, the film is currently in production. The script was written by Simon Beaufoy.

Synopsis: The story of Elizabeth Taylor and her no nonsense gay assistant who worked together to shine a spotlight on the AIDS epidemic when no-one else would. Rocked by the death of the love of her life Richard Burton, Taylor finds a new kind of relationship with her assistant, one that changed the world.

I prefer my roses whiteFebruary 22, 2023 at 5:00 am #1205313286Why would you dress up Walmart and try and pass it off as Sachs Fifth Avenue? Rachel Weisz is lovely and certainly up for the acting demands of playing Taylor but she doesn’t have Elizabeth Taylor’s breath catching beauty. If you’re going to play one of the most beautiful women in history, then you need one of the most beautiful actresses on the planet in the role.

Setting aside the fact that beauty is subjective, and that many feel Rachel Weisz is “one of the most beautiful women in history,” this movie is set after Richard Burton died in 1984 when Elizabeth Taylor was 52 years old. Weisz is currently 52. By age 52, Elizabeth Taylor had done a lot of living— she’d been divorced 7 times and had already experienced many health problems. Frankly, given the period covered by the movie, this is flattering casting.

You may know this already but if not, her new six episode limited series, Dead Ringers, drops on Amazon on April 21st. (It’s based on the 1988 David Cronenberg thriller, adapted with Weisz playing the identical twins, who were male in the movie and had been played by Jeremy Irons.)

I love Dead Ringers. I’m hoping the miniseries is good. Weisz is such a great fit for the role and it’s a plot that suits an update with a female lead.

Agreed. I started a thread about this that’s buried somewhere.
She’s more than a fine replacement for Irons.ReplyCopy URLThe Sunne in Splendour.
