So who do you think will get invites from this year’s nominees and winners?

Julianne Moore is definitely already a member. Not sure about Eddie Redmayne.

Is there somewhere we can access a list of who is a member? Do they release a list?

I only know of the actors who have been discussed on here as already being members and the invitation lists from 2004 onwards. From this years nominees that aren’t assumed members, I think:

Benedict Cumberbatch (if not already a member, will be invited)
    Eddie Redmayne (will be invited)
    Felicity Jones (will be invited)
    Rosamund Pike (could be invited)
J.K. Simmons (if not already a member, will be invited)
    Patricia Arquette (will be invited)
    Emma Stone (will be invited)

Felicity Jones is a certainty but Rosamund Pike isn’t? LMAO the reaching.

Of this year’s acting nominees, 13 are already members. That just leaves…

Patricia Arquette (might already be a member; not certain)
    Benedict Cumberbatch
    Felicity Jones
    Rosamund Pike
    Eddie Redmayne
J.K. Simmons (might already be a member; not certain)
    Emma Stone

All of these have enough of a resume that we would assume all would be invited to join this June.

So does that mean Steve Carrel is a member of the Academy? I’m having a hard time believing that.

^ How is it hard to believe Carrell is a member of the Academy? He’s been a Hollywood A-lister for years and years! Personal opinions on established actors and filmmakers are irrelevant to whether they deserve to be in the Academy.

Last year, weren’t all the non-member nominees all invited to join? They’re bound to do the same again.

There is a website that has been compiling a large list of Academy members and I think they have close to 5000 of the names. The list is pretty detailed and intersting to look through. Nevertooearlymoviepredictions.blogspot.com

I looked and I couldn’t find Arquette, Simmons, or Redmayne. The nominees that were already members seem to be Julianne Moore, Robert Duvall, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, Keira Knightley, Reese Witherspoon, Mark Ruffalo, Marion Cotillard, and maybe Edward Norton.

As well as Ethan Hawke, Bradley Cooper, and Michael Keaton. SIDENOTE: browsing though the list I noticed Melissa Joan Hart might be a member, weird.

We have the full list of invitations since 2004, when the Academy started releasing them each June.

Steve Carell was invited in 2007.

Michael Keaton was invited back in the 1980s.

The other 11 previous nominees/winners joined at that time or before.

We aren’t sure about Patricia Arquette or J.K. Simmons, but the rules were far more relaxed before 2004. They both had good careers going before then, so it is possible they applied and joined in the 1990s or early 2000s.

The other five people (Cumberbatch, Jones, Pike, Redmayne, Stone) will certainly be invited this June.

Thanks for the shout out Jhaddad!

I agree with all those above who say all this year’s acting nominees will get invited. If Arquette or Simmons don’t show up on the invite list — especially as winners — I’ll be adding them anyway since that would make it pretty clear that they must have been invited before.

The writers branch has been pretty consistent over the past several years about inviting all the nominated screenwriters, (I can’t guarantee every single one, but most of them) so I suspect they’ll do the same for Graham Moore, Damien Chazelle, Dan Gilroy, etc..

The directors of best picture nominees usually get in, either as writers or directors, so Chazelle again, plus Morten Tyldum look good (the others are already members). I’d also guess that the directors of the 5 foreign language films will get in.

The categories that seem to do the most snubbing in terms of not always inviting nominees seem to be documentary, sometimes the 3 shorts, and best song (because the music branch tends to focus more on score composers). For example, Oscar Winner Adele didn’t get an invite, and as far as I can tell neither did her co-writer Paul Epworth. So I’m HOPING that both Common and John Legend make the cut, It would be foolish of the Academy to snub them given all that’s gone on this year, but they’ve done foolish things before so I’ll be keeping an eye out.

I’ve noticed that some of the technical branches that give collective awards (like sound and visual effects that go to a team), haven’t always been able to get all the new people in as well. Even film editing has done this a few times. It looks like they eventually catch up and get most of them in eventually, but not always in the first year after their nom/win. Part of this is that those branches have requirements about number of years someone has worked in the field, which CAN be ignored for Oscar nominees but sometime they choose to stick by them. I suspect that another part of this may have to do with industry politics, where they don’t want too many new members in any given year to come from a single production company.

Morton Tyldum probably isn’t a member, but should be invited this year.

The other 4 (Inarritu, Linkalter, Anderson & Miller) should all be members by now.
