All jokes aside this is a serious issue and it’s sad that it probably won’t change anytime soon

Parasite & crouching tiger makes sense because they’re foreign made and voters would rather invest in domestic actors/actresses rather than foreign ones that most likely will not focus in having a career in America. It’s how the world works, it’s building personal connections. You would rather reward someone who will most likely contribute and benefit you (in this case Hollywood) than someone who would generally focus in their homeland. It’s a natural human trait. George McKay was shut out of best actor since the beginning and he came from a highly lauded film although he gave a phenomenal performance. For Awkwafina I never understood why she was so highly praise critically. She gave a good performance but it still felt like it was Awkwafina being Awkwafina but being a little bit sad. I never saw her transform into a new character. I was like, don’t cry Awkwafina, it’s okay throughout the movie lol Adam Sandler on the other-hand went far and beyond transformed himself. I didn’t care for his character because he was so unsympathetic but it was different than what we are mostly used to.

Same thing with Brad Pitt and Dicaprio, and both were nominated for lesser performances.

The fact that The Farewell got completely shut out is unfortunate because it’s such a pleasant film with real pathos and good performances.

This reminds me of the #OscarsSoWhite people who acted like they solved racism when several black actors got nominated in 2016, all while ignoring that Dev Patel was the only actor of Asian descent to get in.

It’s very unfortunate that no Asian actors got nominated this year, because the performances were clearly there, and clearly deserving.

Scarlett Johansson was right….she can play a tree and get away with. Heck she can play and tree and might even get a nomination for it.

Zhao loosing a spot to Kathy Bates was downright insulting.

It was never her spot beloved. Laughs.

In the supporting actresses race, I think parasite was hurt by 3 of the actresses all doing too great of a job to have a single “narrative” to push for one nomination over the others. I think had Neon spent money and marketing pushing just one of them they would have had a chance.

    1. House keeper has the best and most emotional storyline.

    2. Mrs. Park had the most scree time and carried the movie’s comedy aspect.

    3. Poor daughter had the meme song, was on the protagonists side of the story, and had a lot of crowd pleasing line.

Supporting actor Song Kang Ho was hurt by most of the other nominees category frauding themselves into the supporting category. Those who were truly supporting were not only A-list, but worldwide household names, which makes it hard to compete.

Wow I thought people only cared when black people get snubbed. It’s about time someone brought this to light.

Unfortunately I don’t think any of that mattered in the end. Doubtful that it even occurred to most voters that voting for an actor from a South Korean film was even an option.

Ziyi Zhang should have been an Oscar nominee soooo long ago. Same for Michelle Yeoh. I’d have cited Song Kang Ho like most everyone else would have, as well as Yeo-jeong Jo. It was difficult to coalesce around one supporting female there when all of them were so strong and memorable. It’s definitely shameful that the Academy has treated Asian talent so poorly. Attention will be paid though, eventually.

We should’ve seen Song Kang Ho’s miss. He had no precursor support, all he had was some critics’ groups nominations and wins. Just hitting Critics’ Choice would’ve helped significantly.

It is sad indeed. People need to stop being reactive and start stirring some drama up even before the nomination voting window opens so they’ll remember next year.

Not hearing any buzzy upcoming performances from people of Asian descent so far but the louder and the more consistent we complain, the likelier we’ll see change. Temporarily. Lol. Sadly.

Also, how can ordinary civilians be a part of this? Can I worm my way in a stunt team or something so i can be an eligible Oscar voter?

Scarlett Johansson was right….she can play a tree and get away with. Heck she can play and tree and might even get a nomination for it.

To be fair, these are her first nominations even though she’s been one of the most prominent movie actors in the world for two decades, so I wouldn’t say she’s exactly had an easy ride with the Academy and gets nods just like that for playing a tree. One could even say she’s been systematically snubbed until now.

That said, I fully agree that throwing her a double nod and snubbing every single Asian actor in a year full of magnificent performances by them is downright baffling. Was she really that undeniable in Jojo Rabbit? This is only one of of several reasons to be angry about this year’s plate of nominees though.

Please stop with this discrimination nonsence!

No Asian performances were nominatied bacuse they had strong competition and voters decided they were better. Not because they are Asian or Black! This is getting out of hand. This is not racism, this is choice of performance. I doubt the voters did not vote for Awkwafina and Zhao Shuzhen or anyone from Parastie bacuse they were Asian. It’s bacuse they decided other actors did better.

Same with Directing. All five nominees in that category did better directing than any of the female directors such as Greta Gerwig. That’s why they were nominated and not her. It’s not bacuse the voters said ”I will not vote for her because she is a woman!”. They just thaught there was better choices. And I agree.

This racism and discrimination thing is getting out of hand. So we must nominate at least 2 Asian 2 Black actors and 1-2 women in directing even if there were more worhy performances or directors?

People in the US especially are seriously messed up ot those politics. Not everything is politics, discrimination or racism.
