You guys can analyze each individual case to death but at the end of the day, it’s the pattern that tells the story.

Besides, it’s not like we’ve ever had a shortage of white nominees that are less than deserving, so why does that suddenly matter when it comes to minorities?

This is all true; personally I was just analysing them from my own perspective, as it would be hypocritical of me to complain about certain Asian performers being snubbed when I myself would not vote for them.

Please stop with this discrimination nonsence!

No Asian performances were nominatied bacuse they had strong competition and voters decided they were better. Not because they are Asian or Black! This is getting out of hand. This is not racism, this is choice of performance. I doubt the voters did not vote for Awkwafina and Zhao Shuzhen or anyone from Parastie bacuse they were Asian. It’s bacuse they decided other actors did better.

Same with Directing. All five nominees in that category did better directing than any of the female directors such as Greta Gerwig. That’s why they were nominated and not her. It’s not bacuse the voters said ”I will not vote for her because she is a woman!”. They just thaught there was better choices. And I agree.

This racism and discrimination thing is getting out of hand. So we must nominate at least 2 Asian 2 Black actors and 1-2 women in directing even if there were more worhy performances or directors?

People in the US especially are seriously messed up ot those politics. Not everything is politics, discrimination or racism.

This is mostly very simplistic and naive, and does not address the real topic of discussion, which is consistent lack of recognition of Asian acting talent over a long period of time, not just this year.

I think it’s less they didn’t vote for them because they’re Asian or African American or other ethnicities, it’s because they don’t prioritize their work. If you have a screener for “Joker” and “The Farewell” I think the former is the one that will get attention. It’s only films like “Parasite” that spend an entire year generating buzz off of Cannes where they might shrug and say “oh, I’ll check this out”. Otherwise I just don’t see international cinema getting the focus it deserves in the American award system. Lupita in “Us” I’d argue was mainly genre bias. Yet, it isn’t a good look that the majority of times a person of color is nominated – let alone wins – is when they’re playing an oppressed character ESPECIALLY when there are other performances where they’re not oppressed that are very much deserving of attention – Octavia Spencer in any of her nominated performances vs. “Luce” being a good example.

Zhao loosing a spot to Kathy Bates was downright insulting.

More like losing to Shouty Dern. Grr.

Zhao was deserving this year. So dont tell me she wasnt nominated because there were better performances. Visibility could have been the issue here.

But the way academy disregarded Zhang Ziyi for memoirs was clear bias imo. She hit  globes, Baftas and SAG but they chose to nominate Knightly (pride&prejudice) who missed SAG.

The film was nominated in other categories so there was clearly no visibility issues and she hit all the major precursors.

To be fair, these are her first nominations even though she’s been one of the most prominent movie actors in the world for two decades, so I wouldn’t say she’s exactly had an easy ride with the Academy and gets nods just like that for playing a tree. One could even say she’s been systematically snubbed until now. That said, I fully agree that throwing her a double nod and snubbing every single Asian actor in a year full of magnificent performances by them is downright baffling. Was she really that undeniable in Jojo Rabbit? This is only one of of several reasons to be angry about this year’s plate of nominees though.

I thought she was better in Jojo Rabbit than in Marriage Story. I prefer Johansson’s performance to Zhao Shuzhen’s, but I’m really upset for Lee jeong-eun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Park So-dam and Jang Hye-jin. They were unfairly snubbed here.

I’m not even of Asian descent but its clear that the Academy went out of their way this year to snub those who are.

And the fact that they want to only nominated a Black actor for portraying someone who suffers from racism shows that they have not changed.

The first counter argument is “There aren’t enough roles.” There were many great and deserving roles this year.

Zhang Ziyi was snubbed because of the Japanese backlash against casting a Chinese woman in the role. It wasn’t the first time they have chosen to avoid stoking the fire of controversy, whether that be racial discrimination or sexual misconduct claims etc…politics will always get in the way especially of “minorities” least likely to be nominated.

the truly snubbed zhang ziyi performances imo are house of flying daggers and the grandmaster, both films got technical nominations and she gave some of the finest performances in chinese cinema, her memoirs of a geisha turn I’m less keen on, would’ve been worthy of a nomination in that lineup but if I have to pick between her and knightley, knightley it is. gong li was the one who really got the short end of the stick for memoirs imo

If it wasnt a minority it wouldnt matter and will turn into a separate art and artist discussion.

I agree that Gong Li was tragically forgotten awards wise for memoirs.
