I guess anyone could be one good role away. Look at Allison Janney. She didn’t even have much of a film career going but one good role got her the prize.

Her film career is how she beat Metcalf.

I’m surprised no one’s mentioned Adam Driver yet. I think the biggest reason he lost the last two years was because he was going up against super baity roles (gay black man Don Shirley and the Jokah, baby!). Once he gets a baity role of his own, the Oscar will be his.

I was gonna say Driver, but … I dunno. Does that qualify? Weren’t those both good roles?

have to disagree about his Supporting nom. if Ali didn’t win, than REG would have taken it. Driver was classic “welcome to the club young padawan” nom bestowed upon up and comers who had a great year or few years prior to nom. Like Pugh’s nom for LW. means a filler spot that builds “due” narrative in the future.

As for his Actor nom, it’s unclear whether he or Banderas was #2. Most likely Driver cause he hit all precursors so that could imply more industry support (especially actors). So I agree that if he’s GOAT like Jokah next time (perfect blend of role and performer), it’s his to lose. It’s better to win when you are GOAT then when everyone feels someone else was robbed.

Also, Adam Sandler. Uncut Gems didn’t get him a nom but it got him noticed. If he follows it with another strong work instead of quick cash grab, he’ll be taken seriously and get in.

He’s young. Young actors aren’t usually shotgunned wins.

Hopefully the crumbling of the world will be enough for the mercy win.

I don´t think the joker was a baity role until now, this is a character that won the Oscar twice, this character is like the new Hamlet, there was an article talking about that.
And i´m 100% sure that Joaquin wasn´t thinking in winning an Oscar when he took this role.

I hope so too, but I wonder if Glenn Close fans in general will be satisfied with a Supporting Actress Oscar win vs. a Lead Actress Oscar win? She deserves a Lead Actress Oscar, but at this point, the roles are scarce. Many people seem to think she’ll be put into the Supporting Actress category for Hillbilly Elegy. So many veterans like Martin Landau, James Coburn, Alan Arkin, Sean Connery, Robin Williams, Frank Sinatra, Judi Dench, Teresa Wright, Vanessa Redgrave, Peggy Ashcroft, and others only won a Supporting acting Oscar.

Glenn Close should have won for Fatal Attraction. Does it really matter to win in a leading role instead of a supporting role?

Close is old so winning in Supporting makes sense. That’s where older actors are usually awarded unless you get to play Churchill or Queen Elizabeth II.

Iron Lady was such a turkey and blatant Oscar bait (its sole existence was to get her the third Oscar so classic bait) that it’s a true testament of Meryl’s power that she won for that and wasn’t let to wait til a proper movie. others won’t be that lucky.

That said, Meryl should have won for Devil Wears Prada. Miranda Priestly is iconic so it sucks that she was a filler nom rather than one that gave Meryl her third win.
