Tom Hiddleston has yet to quite land a role that could put him in contention, but until everyone actually saw I Saw the Light, it was pretty much unanimous that he would at least garner a nomination. That shows that the critics and public are ready for him. He’s not lacking in skill, certainly, so… all he really has to do is get cast in a bait movie that’s actually good.

Forgive my ignorance if I’m wrong, but this reminds me I was talking about him with a friend a few years ago when he sort of broke out. Apparently he’s multilingual, able to speak fluent Spanish, French and Greek. So I wondered if he couldn’t appear in some European productions perhaps, built up something of a more respective resume like Charlotte Rampling and Kristin Scott-Thomas. Especially if the interesting roles are there. Obviously it’s his career, but why not use that talent and diversity to secure more interesting roles in the future? If I had that privilege, it’s something I’d consider especially with his connections.

Regarding Emily Blunt who has been mentioned a few times, I think her SAG win is significant. Although she wasn’t nominated sadly for the same role at the Oscars, and wasn’t competing against the eventual Oscar winner, she still beat out competition from most of the eventual nominees. I can see why people may see it as a fluke win, but to me it says something, especially considering she hasn’t been nominated at SAG much in the past or appeared in BP nominees. Surely, it’s a sign her time is coming (I hope)!

    FYC:

Antonio Banderas and Asier Etxeandia, Dolor y Gloria (Best Actor/Supporting Actor)
Emily Beecham, Little Joe (Best Actress)
Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren, The Good Liar (Best Actor/Actress)

Why is no one talking about RYAN GOSLING?  He is such a brilliant actor and versatile too.

He needs to do more movies with emma stone because they bring out each others best whenever they are together.

I feel like pretty much any actor could win an Oscar with the right role in the right film, produced by the right studio.

Like Adam Sandler would win an Oscar if he did some prestige Fox Searchlight Biopic.

I think Gosling is one of the most boring leading men working right now.  He gives the same performance in every movie.  He has literally no range.

This is accurate. Sure, you could argue some people are more on the Academy’s radar than others, but all it takes is one good role (and other factors aligning) for anybody to win.

Wanted to list some names I haven’t seen mentioned in this thread yet. Some of these I think are more likely than others, but I think any of them, with the right role, could absolutely steamroll a season:

    Bryan Cranston

    Peter Dinklage

    Robert Downey Jr.

    John Goodman

    Hugh Grant

    Julia Louis-Dreyfus

    John Carroll Lynch

    Viggo Mortensen

    Bill Murray

    Bob Odenkirk

    Gena Rowlands

    Kurt Russell

    Stanley Tucci

    Jeffrey Wright

    Gena is all but retired.

Too lazy to check to see if this name has been mentioned yet.. Nicholas Hoult? I’m watching Mad Max: Fury Road rn and I’ve seen his work in The Favourite.. he’s quite talented.
