No one was beating Zellweger’s actual career-best performance. She rightfully swept the season.
I’m glad that no one saw her comeback coming because it made it all the more fascinating.
No one gave a fuck about her supposed comeback.

The crowd’s reception of her Oscar win and subsequent speech says it all.

One of the weirdest two Oscar wins ever.None of her wins are weird. Au contraire, both were fairly expected.
Cold Mountain was Miramax’s main push of 2003 and she had build enough good will from the past three years from nominations.
Judy’s win was metatextual. She spent 10+ years off the radar in a series of flops (everyone oddly forgets about Bridget Jones 3 in 2016 though), was widely mocked for her looks and her best days were seen as behind her.
It’s basically Judy Garland’s own life played out if she won the Oscar for A Star Is Born.

I think ‘weird’ was used because her performance in Cold Mountain is actually categorically bad, not because it wasn’t expected

What’s more fascinating to me about Zellweger is how she managed to dodge any MeToo/Weinstein question considering all her nominations before Judy were for Weinstein films, yet other actresses got called out for supporting/working with problematic people.

Because I’m pretty certain the average movie consumer won’t bother to sit down and see JUDY, whereas BJD is a classic almost everyone has seen. When the mainstream people finally get on board and watch these lesser-known films for which people win Academy Awards they can understand why. So I’m pretty sure people will always love her BDJ performance, as do we all, because lots of them detect a great deal of themselves in Bridget but once you’ve seen JUDY it’s easy to tell which performance was more of an achievement and career-defining.
That would still be Bridget Jones Diary if it’s her most popular film, her big breakthrough as a leading lady, her big major introduction to the world, and considered one of the best British accents attempted by an American actor/actress ever.

The Cats actress will be another Cynthia Erivo at best

July 17, 2020 at 1:39 pm #1203589587Jennifer Hudson is coming with “Respect”. If she gets decent enough reviews and the film proves to be a hit, she could easily win based on the role alone.
I don’t the the role is enough to push her to a win with only “decent enough reviews”.
I’ve seen several people say she could be this year’s Zellweger, but Renée’s performance was acclaimed, it was her film that only got a meh response. And also, while Aretha Franklin is a legend, Judy Garland is a cinematic legend, which instantly made her role much more baity to the Academy.

He was probably second or third this year, maybe King Lear will give him another Best Actor award. If not, I can see him winning with a supporting role.

Didn’t know he was doing King Lear, that’s very exciting. He was already a great Shylock. I’ll keep my eye on this.
