The title says it all. Actors with or without Oscars that when comes to pick roles for the golden statuette and when are on the run promote it a lot to win.
Oh and it would be nice to add the ones who dont give a damn about it.April 3, 2013 at 10:59 am #98009
This is actually vague. Limit it to people who don’t have one and a list of names will come. Include people who have one but always wants one and this thread because directionless.April 3, 2013 at 11:04 am #98010
Anne Hathaway (Les Mis) and Melissa Leo (The Fighter) are clear and recent examples. They succeeded.April 3, 2013 at 11:27 am #98011

The thread was made for people to put names theirselves. I dont really get where you are going but you think I should have post a list in my original post? I did that on purpose but whatever.
Anne Hathaway – there is no doubt. she started campaigning even before the movie premiered
Kate Winslet – not so much in her first nominations but in the year she won you could see on her face the desperation
Leonardo Dicaprio – I cant really blame him, if I was him, I would be the same way as he is being snubbed time after time
Tom Hooper – not an actor but he chooses his films in a pretentious way only to win awardsApril 3, 2013 at 11:49 am #98012
Of course it’s another forum to bitching about Anne Hathaway, Melissa Leo or Kate Winslet. For why? They wanted to win an Oscar for sure but who doesn’t? Maybe they were “too much” but everyone who says that he/she don’t want to win an Oscar and wouldn’t be happy for it is a liar and should not be nominated ever again.
And to name Leonardo DiCaprio is such a silly thing since he was clearly snubbed three times lately (Inception/Shutter Island; J. Edgar, Django Unchained) for not campaigning. Christoph Waltz did a lot of campaigning and he won. That’s how it works.April 3, 2013 at 12:00 pm #98013
Anne Hathaway, but she deserved it.
Melissa Leo was the most desperate I’ve ever seen. And for such a terrible performance.April 3, 2013 at 12:13 pm #98014
I feel like nicholas Cage really wanted one and proboably wants another.April 3, 2013 at 12:29 pm #98015
Doesn’t everyone?April 3, 2013 at 12:54 pm #98016
Renée ZellwegerApril 3, 2013 at 1:26 pm #98017
Kate Winslet is always used, and I can see why I suppose, but was she really as bad as Hathaway and Leo? I don’t think so… They did everything but send gift baskets to every member of the Academy including a screener, cheese and wine, and a hand written letter to vote for them. Regardless, what does it matter? They’re campaigning wouldn’t mean jack if voters just flat-out didn’t like their performance. And hate on Leo all you want, but she was winning tons of awards for ‘The Fighter’, including the most individual critic’s awards, well before her all-out campaign assault.April 3, 2013 at 1:29 pm #98018
Ryan Gosling. He tries for an Oscar in almost every film he does. You can tell he wants one bad.April 3, 2013 at 1:36 pm #98019
Besides Joaquin Phoenix, who doesn’t want an Oscar? Usually the desperate ones win unfortunately like Winslet and Leo. I know Close would’ve given up her soul for one last year lol.April 3, 2013 at 1:40 pm #98020

Really?! Hmm.. I think you just might be the only one with that opinion. Or at least I have never heard anyone else who shared that view. Just curious, but what makes you think that? He doesn’t strike me as the type of person who craves an Oscar at all. I’m sure, like anyone else, he’d love to win one, but I doubt he chooses roles with the intentions to get one. ‘Drive’, ‘Blue Valentine’, ‘Lars and the Real Girl’, ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’, his upcoming films ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’, and ‘Only God Forgives’… Heck, even his actual Oscar nominated role for ‘Half Nelson’ didn’t exactly scream OSCAR! Most are small indie films that’d be lucky to even get recognition. The only somewhat “baity” role he did recently, that I can think of, was ‘The Ides of March’. But even still, I don’t think he did it solely for an Oscar.April 3, 2013 at 3:50 pm #98021
My list of not already mentioned names:
Jennifer Lawrence (gotta love the honesty)
Cuba Gooding Jr.
Pretty much everyone secretly?April 3, 2013 at 5:27 pm #98022
^ I remember Nicole Kidmansaying she’d love to win another because during the time she won, she was in a stage in her life where in she was lonely and alone, and while winning the Oscar back then gave more gravitas to her acting career, she felt empty waking up the day after with no one to share it to. That’s why now that she has a husband and kids, she said she’d love to win another. I don’t think that’s desperation. To be fair to her though, she already deserved her second. So it’s just waiting for the right project.
And while I think Hathaway wanted one badly, I don’t think she was desperately campaigning for it. She was just annoying with the shocked faces, but I don’t see her camapigning really heavily.
Kate and MeLeo are top two in recent years easily. Oh and I think Annette Bening really wants one too.
