In Hitchcock’s Notorious, Leopoldine Konstantin played Claude Rains’ mom when she was actually only 3 years older than him irl.

Honestly the best example of agism and sexism in the industry vis-à-vis roles for women. You play teenager all throughout your twenties until you hit 30 and bam, you’re the mother.
I was shocked when I first learned their was only 7 years between Poehler (33) and McAdams (26).
If it was made five years later I’m pretty certain there’s a timeline where McAdams (31) plays Lohan’s (23) mother instead of her peer.

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 24, 2022 at 12:00 am #1204746151The obvious answer on the TV side is Mandy Moore in This is Us. There are a few examples in TV, most of them in The Crown.
Amy Schumer’s sketch Last Fuckable Day has a great zinger about Sally Field playing Tom Hanks’ love interest and then his mother within the span of 6 years.
Because Hollywood is scared of actual older women/actresses (like society writ large), there are heaps of examples of younger women being cast to play older characters (like how men played women characters on stage in ye olde times when everyone was scared of women – not much has really changed).
Anne Bancroft was 35 in The Graduate, playing an ‘older woman’ 10-20 years older than that? Dustin Hoffman was 29 playing a college student. The rationale for her casting is pretty gross but that’s in line for a pretty questionable film that portrayed itself as radically modern. Beware misogynists in progressivist clothing.

It would take a much longer time for J-Law to be nominated again after Winter’s Bone if DOR didn’t cast her in his films portraying adult women. Her performance in Mother! is 10 times better than any of her DOR performances.
